Tomorrow’s clash with Portugal will be England’s 50th game at the new Wembley Stadium
TOMORROW’s fixture against Portugal will mark England men’s 50th game at the new Wembley stadium.
A lot has happened since 2007: Wayne Rooney became England’s highest ever goalscorer with 52 in 110 games, eclipsing Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker.
England have gone through four managers: Steve McClare, Fabio Capello, Stuart Pearce and now Roy Hodgson.
Over these nine years, their most resounding victory came against Andorra in 2009.
Rooney, Lampard, Defoe and Crouch all scored in a thrilling 6-0 win.
The cruellest defeat was inflicted by Chile in 2013.
Barcelona striker Alexis Sanchez scored twice and punished a dejected England.
Arguably the most memorable fixture, however, was England’s 3-2 victory against Scotland in the 2013 friendly.
Rickie Lambert scored with his first touch in international football, and England came from behind twice to see off their rivals.
The new Wembley stadium was completed in 2007. With 90,000 seats, it is the second largest in Europe and the largest in the United Kingdom.
Tomorrow’s game will kick off 7.45pm and marks England’s last warm-up game before Euro 2016.
