Promoter Oscar De La Hoya wants to secure a venue where reduced crowds are permitted.

And he hopes to cash in on his prior relationship with Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

But even more unprecedented measures are being considered including America's national memorial sculpture and the island that homes to their most notorious prison.

De La Hoya told the Palm Springs Desert Sun: "A venue like Fantasy Springs is very possible. It’s something we’ve discussed internally.

"There would be a lot of excitement. I always go back to relationships and Fantasy Springs has been an amazing partner.

"We love the venue and it’s convenient. The fact that the gate is irrelevant, it makes all the sense in the world.

“So, if our options are Mount Rushmore and Alcatraz and Fantasy Springs, I wouldn’t mind going to Fantasy Springs because it would be the most convenient for us because of our partnership with the casino.”

Canelo has been training throughout the pandemic, despite his cancelled fight against WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

Saunders, 30, was still being considered as an opponent for the Mexican, but he pulled out citing an inability to train properly.

Chris Eubank Jr, 30, and Callum Smith, also 30, were among those to enter the Canelo sweepstake.

But Golden Boy promoter Bernard Hopkins revealed John Ryder - who was unfortunate not to get the decision against Smith last year - has now emerged as the front runner to face Alvarez.
