NFL star Patrick Mahomes signs biggest sports contract in history at £402m over TEN years… but who makes top five?
NFL star Patrick Mahomes has signed a ten-year contract extension worth £402MILLION to stay with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The deal, which is the biggest contract in sports history, also has a £112m injury guarantee, according to ESPN.
Chiefs Chairman and Chief Executive Clark Hunt said in a statement: "With his dynamic play and infectious personality, he is one of the most recognized and beloved figures to put on the Chiefs uniform.
"I'm delighted that he will be a member of the Chiefs for many years to come."
Quarterback Mahomes, 24, who was drafted 10th overall by Kansas City in 2017, led the Chiefs to Super Bowl victory in Miami in February, ending the team's 50-year title drought.
In a video posted to his Twitter account the two-time Pro Bowler, who threw 50 touchdowns in 2018 to become the league MVP, said he was "here to stay".
Mahomes wrote: "Chiefs Kingdom, you've been with me since the beginning. From rookie year to becoming a starter.
"You helped us overcome adversity. To become Super Bowl champs. And we're staying together … for a long time. We're chasing a dynasty."
Mahomes ended last season as the league's highest-rated passer.
The Texan moves to the top of the list of the most lucrative contracts ever, with SunSport taking a look at who completes the top five.
MIKE TROUT - £341M
Trout, 28, is an eight-time MLB All-Star, three-time American League Most Valuable Player, and is a seven-time winner of the Silver Slugger Award.
So it's no surprise the Los Angeles Angels have him tied into a whopping £341m contract.
Canelo Alvarez - £292m
Streaming service DAZN wanted to make their mark in a big way on boxing - so signed up the much-loved Mexican to a five-fight 11-year deal worth £292m.
And with Canelo, 29, being a four-weight world champion with his only loss being against boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, it wasn't a bad move at all.
BRYCE HARPER - £264M
You know when you have a "five-tool player" you have something special on your hands.
And that's exactly what Philadelphia Phillies baseball star Harper, 27, is, excelling in every non-pitcher position.
GIANCARLO STANTON - £260M
Being the designated hitter for the New York Yankees, Stanton, 30, is no stranger to making the headlines.
And his £260m deal certainly did that, but the 6ft 6in powerhouse continues to take MLB by storm.
