Louis van Gaal tells incoming boss Jose Mourinho: I’ve built the foundations for another Manchester United glory era
Special One will take over at Old Trafford after the Dutchman was sacked on Monday
Sacked Louis van Gaal told Manchester United manager-in-waiting Jose Mourinho: I’ve laid the foundations for an Old Trafford glory era.
The Red Devils last night finally put the Dutchman out of his misery by officially confirming his exit — 12 hours after he arrived at Carrington to get the bullet from executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
Former Chelsea boss Mourinho will be named as LVG’s successor.
And FA Cup winner Van Gaal, 64, is adamant more silverware will soon follow.
Van Gaal, who had a year left on his contract and will get a £5million pay-off, was axed after two years.
He said: “I believe the foundations are firmly in place to enable the club to move forward and achieve even greater success.
“I hope winning the FA Cup will give the club a platform to build upon next season to restore the success that this passionate set of fans desire.
“It has been an honour to manage such a magnificent club as Manchester United, and in doing so I have fulfilled a long-held ambition.
“I am very disappointed to be unable to complete our intended three-year plan.”
Van Gaal was sacked for failing to reach next season’s Champions League after a fifth-place finish.
But although his playing style was panned, he did bring through the latest wave of young United talent.
Marcus Rashford has blossomed up front, Jesse Lingard scored the Wembley winner to sink Crystal Palace and big money signing Anthony Martial has also shone.
Van Gaal backed his kids to carry on what he started.
He added: “It has been particularly rewarding to see so many young players take their chance.”
Woodward said: “He leaves us with a legacy of having given several young players the confidence to show their ability on the highest stage.”
