But Wenger believes he is now close to sealing the £30million arrival of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.

And the Emirates boss, who has been rocked with the news of Danny Welbeck's latest injury blow, will immediately turn his attention to landing Juventus striker Alvaro Morata and move for Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Real Madrid are unlikely to activate their £23m buy-back clause and Morata meaning Juve could sell the player to Arsenal for £30m.

Wenger has previously tried to sign the 23-year-old Spaniard on loan and on a permanent deal.
Arsenal are also increasingly fearful that Alexis Sanchez is a target for both Juventus and Bayern Munich, and Mkhitaryan plays in the same positions behind a main striker.
Mkhitaryan was close to signing for both Spurs and Liverpool during his spell at Shakhtar Dontesk.
Arsenal are also keen on Roma defender Antonio Rudiger but he looks set for a switch to Chelsea.

Wenger is also set for a major clear-out after this disappointing season.

Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini are also certain to leave.
But Theo Walcott, Per Mertesacker, Mathieu Debuchy and Kieran Gibbs could all follow.
