In a league of their own

Manchester United have benefited most from own goals in Premier League history, with a whopping 66

Red Devils are streets ahead when it comes to receiving a helping hand from the opposition, averaging three bonus goals per season

MANCHESTER UNITED may have won an incredible 13 Premier League titles — but they’ve needed a couple of strokes of luck along the way to get there.
In fact, over the years, the Old Trafford outfit have benefited from a whopping 66 own goals.

That means that they bag around three goals per season off the opposition’s boot — including one, thanks to Damien Delaney, in the win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

In fact, the own goal last night pushed United’s tally to three for the season — only one behind league-topping Chelsea and Sunderland, both on four.
United’s figure is a humongous 20 per cent higher than that of the next highest own goal recipients, Liverpool.
The Reds have benefited from 55 goals from the opposition, six ahead of Chelsea on 49.

Arsenal come in third on 47, while Everton have 41 to their name since the 1992-93 season.
Recently relegated Aston Villa have been on the receiving end of 39, while Southampton and Tottenham are on 38.
One-time Prem champions Blackburn, alongside Newcastle, round off the top ten, with 36 apiece — still at around 1.5 per season.
But it’s the team led by Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal that top the pile — and their figure of 66 will take some catching.
