However, despite his third Premier League goal of the season, the ex-Manchester United defender feels there are areas of Chilwell's defensive game that can be improved upon.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: "It's a staggering goal, phenomenal strike.

"But I thought for the majority of the game when he got stood up one-v-one against [Ismaila] Sarr, he was probably on the receiving end a little bit.

"Maybe his footwork need to improve, his body position when going one-v-one, but his intensity and physicality running forward and his quality when he gets in the opposition half is up there with the best around at the moment."Listen, he's a young lad, he's got areas of his game to improve, obviously.

"We can't expect Ben Chilwell at his age to be the finished article.

"He's just come on to the scene in the Premier League, a couple of years playing, he's got room for improvement.

"I'm sure knowing Brendan Rodgers he will be working on these details.

"Young defenders mature a little later but he's a fantastic prospect."

Chilwell has been linked with a £75million move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have already signed Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner this summer and boss Frank Lampard has reportedly identified the England international as his number one target at left-back.

Chilwell broke the deadlock in the 90th minute at Vicarage Road on Saturday with an arrowed effort from the left side of the box, before a Craig Dawson bicycle kick nicked a point for Watford.
