But according to Kicker, the Reds now face a battle with Chelsea to secure the German’s signature with the Blues making direct contact with RB Leipzig to sign Werner.

Chelsea overturned a transfer ban in time for January — but only brought in 16-year-old Bryan Fiabema.

The Blues are ready to let Olivier Giroud leave and bring in enough quality to provide serious competition to Tammy Abraham in attack.

Lampard has made it clear to the club’s board that he needs them to sign a forward to help him stay clear of Manchester United, Wolves and Sheffield United in the battle for Champions League qualification.

They were heavily linked with PSG’s Edinson Cavani but were unable to get a deal over the line.

But Lamps has refused to rule out a transfer for the Uruguayan this summer and is sniffing around Werner to bolster the Blues’ ranks at the front also.

Bayern Munich have been linked with Werner since last summer but Reds boss Klopp plans to tempt the Leipzig ace away from his former rivals by meeting the star in person.
