The rare brain disease causes blood vessels supplying blood to the brain to become narrowed.

Murdock needed the brain operation to live and reduce the risk of a stroke.

Last month, the professional fighter posted a picture of his Halloween costume, making light of the disease.

However on Wednesday in California, the fighter put all jokes aside to undergo surgery.

Much to the relief of his friends and family, the operation was successful.

On his Instagram story, the athlete thanked others for messages of support and posted a gruesome video of his surgery scar.

The featherweight fighter is a member of Team Alpha Male, the home of Urijah Faber and former bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt.

Murdock made his amateur debut in 2010. Nine years later, the rising star was scheduled to fight Jordan Griffin at UFC on ESPN 3 in Minneapolis.

48 hours before the fight, it was revealed that Murdock was ruled medically unfit to continue.

However, the featherweight assumed he would be cleared:

“Originally when I got there, it was just called a high grade stenosis at the time, and [commission physicians] didn’t know the size of the blockage,” he told .

“They just knew that there was a lack of blood flow.

“I didn’t know much and the doctor at the time—I almost thought they were going to clear me and have me take care of this after the fight.”

Upon recommendation from the UFC, Murdock underwent approximately 10 tests and scans in the following months and was eventually diagnosed with the Moyamoya condition.

At first, Murdock didn’t take the tests seriously:

“I just kept thinking each test result was going to tell me, ‘It turns out your body’s fine.’ But that’s never been the case.

“They told me I have Moyamoya and I was like, ‘What the f**k, what’s that mean?’

“They’re like, ‘Brain surgery’s the only way to fix that,’ and I think that’s when it all kind of sunk in.

“For a long time I was just hoping that nothing would happen, I guess.”

Before resuming his fighter career, Murdock will be taking time out to recover from the operation and get some much-needed rest.
