Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo Alvarez ‘hold talks’ over superfight in 2020 – but Golovkin trilogy could come first
TALKS have reportedly been held between Billy Joe Saunders and Saul Alvarez over a potential fight in 2020.
But it has been claimed that a trilogy fight between Canelo and Gennady Golovkin remains more likely following their two epic contests against each other.
Saunders called out the Mexican following his US debut victory against Marcelo Esteban Coceres where he successfully defended his WBO super-middleweight belt.
Speaking after his 11th round stoppage victory, he said: "Canelo may look at that and think now is the time to get me. I knocked him out when I knew I had to. I thought 'you have to stop him' and I stopped him.
"I knew I had to dig very deep. I am not one to make excuses. I came over here five days out, nine hours' time difference, I haven't slept right for five days.
"When someone is talking abut Canelo and you are fighting an Argentinean, you don't look past him but one eye is off. I have to look at the performance."
"There have been some very preliminary discussions between the Canelo/Saunders sides about a fight next year, per sources.
"DAZN will continue to push for a Canelo-GGG trilogy in May."
Saunders has long campaigned for a bout against the 29-year-old - who recently became a four-weight world champion after ripping the WBO light-heavyweight belt away from Sergey Kovalev.
Saunders has competition from WBC super-middleweight champ Callum Smith in the quest to land the fight against Canelo.
And UFC ace Jorge Masvidal also recently stated his intentions about switching over to face Alvarez, as he declared he can drop the pound-for-pound star.
