AMAZON has reduced the cost of an outdoor security camera that charges with solar power by 30%.

Delighted customers are busy snapping up the Eufy SoloCam S220 for £69.99, down from £99.99.

I spotted this discounted smart device on Amazon's list earlier today.

Sales have spiked by 89% in the last 24 hours - customers clearly can't get enough of that £30 price drop.

There was a time when home security would involve analogue CCTV and costly professional installation.

But this neat little gadget is completely wireless, and thanks to its super-light build (it weighs just 313g), can be stuck up anywhere without any drilling or screws required.

Then, via your home's wi-fi, it can deliver a continuous 4K video feed to your mobile, TV or whatever device you connect it to.

Clever shoppers who are building a smart home system will have probably already clocked this device is Alexa-compatible.

All you'll need to do is ask the Amazon assistant to show you who's at the door, and it will load the live feed on your phone (just in case you're actively avoiding all those campaigners in the lead-up to the elections, like I am).

Eufy doesn't ask buyers to spend extra on a monthly subscription, like rival brand Ring does with its doorbells and cameras: that £69.99 upfront cost is all you'll ever pay.

And yes, that extends to batteries as well. Here's perhaps the most eye-catching thing about the : it's solar-powered.

Although it comes with a mains charger, Eufy claims you'll never need to use this.

I'll admit I was a bit sceptical when I read this - especially given the touch-and-go nature of our Great British Summertime lately.

So I and the manufacturer claims: 'With just 1-2 hours of direct sunlight every day, your eufyCam will stay charged around the clock.

'Cloudy and rainy days may cause the power of eufyCam to drop, but as long as there is a sunny day for 1 to 2 hours, it can be quickly charged.'

A customer on the Amazon website has written: 'The battery lasts long enough even if it were cloudy for 3 [or] 4 days.'

Another says: 'This is one of the best outdoor camera I have bought and used, solar charging just works even in the UK!'

One other buyer claims that 'a full battery is likely to last for 1.5 months without solar charging for light detection.'

Ultimately, it's a trade-off. If you want 100% guaranteed power, you'll need to pick up a wired security camera, which will need more careful installation.

Eufy does a .

If you do go down the solar-powered route, my only advice is to buy fast: Amazon have the £30 discount marked as a limited-time deal.
