Kaley Cuoco loves this treatment for dark circles — I tried it and now I do too

When I saw that I was going to be doing a Kiehl’s Avocado Eye Cream review, I was excited.

Cold winds and mega storms had left the skin under and around my eyes feeling dry and tight, so I was curious to see if their bestselling eye treatment would do the job.

Founded in 1851, the brand is steeped in history, and over the years has had a host of celebrity fans including A-listers like Kylie Jenner and Nick Jonas who’ve said they use Kiehl’s as part of their skincare routine.

Kaley Cuoco has even said she swears by the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado to brighten dark circles and hydrate her under eyes.

So, I gave that exact eye cream a go to see if Kaley Cuoco was right.

What does Kiehl's Avocado Eye Cream do?

The Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is all about hydration. Made with avocado oil and shea butter, it nourishes and moisturises the delicate area around the eyes.

It's been formulated so your skin gets a hit of moisture in two stages, which in turn leaves you with brighter skin. Win win.

Kiehl's Avocado Eye Cream review: quick summary

This is an intensely hydrating eye cream which is unsurprising when you look at its ingredients list – avocado oil and shea butter are both known to be natural moisturisers and conditioners.

The texture takes some getting used to. Initially it’s buttery and thick, but then the water is suddenly released transforming it in to a slippery and thin product. It’s one that needs to be tried to be fully understood because it’s like no cream I’ve ever used before.

I did find it a little disconcerting the first time I blended it out but without the element of surprise, I quite enjoyed the two-part texture.

From any eye cream, I’d expect to see and feel a noticeable difference when applying it, but I wasn’t expecting anything quite as good as this. As soon as it went on it was refreshing, and the brightening effect was dramatic. I didn’t look like I’d only had a few hours of sleep the night before (which unfortunately I had).

A little goes a very long way here; I just needed to lightly dab my ring finger in to the generously sized 28ml pot (it does also come in a 14ml version) and even then, I found I still had a little more than I really needed.

Because of the buttery texture, patting it in gently isn’t really an option, so be careful when rubbing in the product not to tug too hard on your delicate under eyes.

More hydrating than a normal facial moisturiser, the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado left my eyes looking awake and feeling refreshed.

For an eye cream, the pot is an excellent size

For an eye cream, the pot is an excellent size

After a few glowing (unsponsored) endorsements from Kaley Cuoco I had high hopes for the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado. Packaging isn’t the reason that Kiehl’s is such a well-respected brand in the beauty world, so I wasn’t surprised to see a screw top white pot with nothing but green writing as way of decoration.

What I was surprised by – pleasantly – was the size of the tub. Eye creams can come in pots as small as 5ml because you only need a very little, but the one I had in front of me was 28ml. It does also come in a 14ml tub, but I was floored by the amount of product. It looked nearly as big as the Ultra Facial Cream.

Speaking of the Ultra Facial Cream, when I unscrewed the cap of the eye treatment, I noticed that the two creams have almost identical scents. It’s incredibly subtle and reminded me of facial suncreams, verging ever so slightly on clinical.

I also noticed that the cream itself had a green tinge which meant it did somewhat resemble creamy avocado. Not to the point of it looking like there’s avocado sat in the pot but enough for me to note that there was a nod towards the name, intentional or not.

This cream is thick. Very thick. Just one small dab with my ring finger was enough to spread the product under my eye and up under my brow bone which made me even happier with the size of the pot. There’s no question, this will last for months.

Most noticeably, the texture of this eye cream is unusual.

It starts off like a traditional cream with a buttery finish that at first is quite difficult to blend in to skin. But then, after a couple of rubs, it becomes slippery, releasing water that makes the cream thin. It feels like a capsule has suddenly burst.

That hydration release is magical. Strange and like something I’ve never seen in an eye cream before, but magical nonetheless. It is cool and refreshing and you can feel the water sinking into your skin, satiating thirsty areas.

It feels far more hydrating than your standard facial moisturiser and instantly creates a dramatically brighter under eye. Kaley Cuoco was right, there’s no need to worry about dark circles with this wonder cream in your collection.

The avocado oil and shea butter that is in the Creamy Eye Treatment moisturises, conditions and nourishes so skin feels soft and renewed. I even tried it under only one eye for a few hours to really gauge how effective it is, and the difference was palpable.

The eye with the cream under felt awake and hydrated whereas the area around the other eye was tight and tired. It also looked far brighter for those few hours, although I eventually caved and had to even the two sides out because the difference was so stark.

Because of the unusual texture and the burst of hydration, this isn’t the easiest cream to apply. Normally I like to tap eye creams in gently to protect the delicate skin, but this one needs to be rubbed. It can feel like it’s dragging a little but, once the moisture is released, it’s far easier to absorb.

Even after a night with very little sleep, I saw how much this cream helped to brighten and wake up my eyes. I also love that it doesn’t have any chemical ingredients (like vitamin C or retinol) so it is completely safe to wear in the day without worrying about making the incredibly delicate eye area more sensitive to the sun.

How to apply Kiehl's Avocado Eye Cream

The texture's a bit funny, so you'll need to gently rub the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado in with your fingers rather than tapping.

Being as delicate as possible is key, so try using your ring finger to start with.

Apply the product under the eyes, then follow the bones around the inside of your nose, up under the brow bone and out to the temples to look fresher and more awake.

Kiehl's Avocado Eye Cream review: the verdict

I must say, I'm not normally one for eye creams but this one has fully changed my mind.

It's refreshing, hydrating, brightening, it comes in a pot the size of some full face moisturisers and it has a texture like nothing I've ever seen before.

I'm not surprised that this is the brand's number one selling eye cream globally and that it's getting celebrity endorsements, because it works.

I'm sold and my eyes are thankful for it.
