Quick Summary
The Canon Pixma TS8350 offers solid printing performance, a stylish design and a few interesting extras.
The touchscreen, in particular, is one of the best we've seen in a printer, making the overall navigation experience a real pleasure.
The Pixma TS8350 is not exactly cheap, but considering its features, if you cant stump up the cash, we think it's worth the money.
Design
- Canon Pixma TS8350, £229.28 on Amazon -
The Pixma TS8350 is a beautiful and compact device. Its glossy, squared design is enhanced by the large touchscreen in the middle, which has a dedicated hinge to allow for pivoting up and down for a more comfortable navigating experience.
In terms of paper capacity, the printer features a 100-sheet input tray protruding by a few centimetres at the front.
While the tray somehow prevents the printer from having a perfect cuboid shape when closed, it also facilitates the paper feeding process, which we found very practical.
Just above the feeding tray is the output tray, which also doubles as an input tray for both CDs and nail stickers.
The TS8350 also has a rear feed revealed by a flap at the back of the lid and intended for thicker, photo paper.
Features and connectivity
The Canon Pixma TS8350 is a very well-rounded printer, offering a straightforward setup, scanner capabilities, and compatibility with a number of mobile applications.
In fact, while the printer offers traditional USB Type B connectivity and an SD slot in the front-left corner, it actually shines the most for its wireless features.
The TS8350 offers dual-band 802.11n connectivity, allowing for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Compatibility with the latter, in particular, means that large-file projects will be sent to the device, and printed, faster.
Setup is truly a breeze here, though the instructions could have been a bit clearer. Still, if you have a modern router, you can literally connect the printer to your WiFi network in a matter of seconds using WPS, then use it across all your connected devices without the need for any additional software.
Of course, if you want to make the most out of it, the printer is compatible with a number of mobile apps, though you'll have to register it with Canon to take advantage of these capabilities.
The list also includes Canon's own Nail Creator app, designed to create and print customised nail stickers.
Performance
- Canon Pixma TS8350, £229.28 on Amazon -
It may be a solid all-rounder, by the Pixma TS8350 does not sacrifice quality for extra features.
Printing quality is great, and that goes for both colour and black and white.
Naturally, you'll want to use glossy paper when printing photos, as printing them on normal paper would result in excessively dark tones.
Using the right medium, however, resulted in beautiful photos, free from the excessive saturation of some printers today.
When it comes to printing speed, the TS8350 performed particularly well with black and white prints, reaching 16 pages per minute.
Colour print results were a bit slower at 7 pages per minute, but that's still fairly speedy.
Running costs
The only real downside of the Canon Pixma TS8350 is that its running costs can be quite expensive, particularly because Canon does not sell ink packages including all six standard-sized cartridges.
The closest thing you can get is with cyan, black, yellow and magenta, and a separate cartridge for the photo blue (581 PB).
The cost for that is currently £46.67, but it's difficult to assess an effective cost per page as the photo blue tends to last much longer than the others.
Still, compared to other mid-range printers, running costs for the Canon Pixma TS8350 are slightly more expensive than average.
The Verdict
There is no such thing as the perfect printer, but all things considered, the Pixma TS8350 is one of the best ones we have tested.
Its compact size, elegant design and solid printing performance surely place it at the top of this price range.
Running costs could be lower, but if you don't print too often, and value scanning and mobile connectivity highly, the TS8350 could easily be the right printer for you.
