Can you use a hot water bottle when pregnant?

Thankfully, the answer is yes. Pregnancy can be a time of endless aches and pains, and hot water bottles are a perfect, inexpensive way of alleviating these. Just make sure you always use a cover, and that it’s not too hot. You can use it for pain in your back, sides or legs.

Do hot water bottles expire?

Hot water bottles should be replaced every two years because if they’re old, they can break and cause burns. Rubber is a natural material so it degrades over time.

Before using one, you should always check for signs of wear and tear, as old bottles can split open - not ideal when you’re using near-boiling water to fill them up. Even if you don’t notice signs of wear and tear, replace your inner bottle every two years.

You should also always use the stopper that came with your hot water bottle, as using another stopper may compromise the safety of the hot water bottle.

How long do hot water bottles last?

Hot water bottles and their stoppers need to be replaced every two years, but of course, you can keep your cover and simply replace the inner rubber bottle.

You should always check your bottle to make sure it has not degraded before using it, as using a bottle with splits or degradation can cause serious injury. Many hot water bottles have a number inside them, inside a symbol that looks like a flower.

The number shows you the year it was made - for example, 22 means 2022. This number will help you determine when you need to replace your bottle.

How to fill a hot water bottle

The water you use to fill up your hot water bottle should be hot, but not boiling: fill up your kettle and leave it for about 15 minutes before filling up your hot water bottle.

Fill up the bottle to two-thirds or less, and make sure the outer cover is always on when you fill it up. You should also expel all the air above the water level before sealing, and make sure the stopper is securely screwed on.

It’s best not to take the bottle to bed, and to make sure there is a layer of clothing between you and the bottle. It’s also recommended that your hot water bottle should not have direct prolonged contact with the same area of skin. When you store your hot water bottle, make sure you don’t place anything on top of the bottle during storage.
