  • Why is it called Black Friday and where did it come from?

Black Friday was given its name as it is often the day that shops "move into the black" – meaning they have enough money to cover their costs, while reducing prices.

The sale falls on the weekend after the US's Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States that originated as a harvest festival and has been celebrated on and off since 1789.

Many non-retail employees and schools have Thanksgiving and the following Friday off, creating a four-day weekend and increasing the number of potential shoppers.

The weekend traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season ahead of Christmas and New Year.

The Friday after Thanksgiving came to be associated with shopping in the 1950s, though didn't gain the name Black Friday until later.

The tradition has spread elsewhere in recent decades, and is now marked in the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, and a growing list of other countries.

We've put together a guide on the Black Friday meaning and name, where you can read more about its origins.

Fast-forward to 2024, and Black Friday sees tens of thousands of brands and retailers around the world taking part.

  • When is Black Friday?

Black Friday is a major fixture on the shopping calendar around the world, and for 2024, the event will take place on 29 November.

Previously just a one-day event, Black Friday has now morphed into a month-long onslaught of discounts and deals for consumers to take advantage of.

Shoppers can expect everything from Amazon Fire TV Prime member deals to Black Friday Advent calendars and Christmas gift sets.

For many savvy shoppers, Black Friday is a particularly good time to snap up savings when shopping for Christmas and New Year – whether stocking up on gifts for loved ones, or prepping the home for the busy festive season.

As always, we recommend shopping around and comparing prices during the sales to ensure you are getting the cheapest possible deal.

  • How to get the best deals on Black Friday

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals a few ways you can get the best deals this Black Friday...

Buy the right products - there are literally thousands of products to choose from every Black Friday, but some are worth going after more than others.

Dan Evans, editor at HotUKDeals, previously told The Sun five particular brands or themes are worth pursuing - Lego, fashion, video games or consoles, Shark and Ring doorbell.

Create a wish list - don't get sucked in to promises of massive discounts and offers.

Make a wish list of items you actually want to buy so you don't end up getting something you don't need.

Earn as you spend - it's worth checking if any Black Friday deals can be bought through cashback sites like Quidco or Topcashback.

It's free to sign up and you could get what is effectively free money just for buying something you would have any way.

  • When is Cyber Monday 2024?

Cyber Monday always falls on the Monday after Black Friday, and is considered one of the final opportunities to snap up incredible savings before the festive season starts.

Many of the best Black Friday deals often run until Cyber Monday, giving shoppers an extended period to snap up discounts – or even specific deals, just for the day.

Cyber Monday was created in 2005 by marketing companies to encourage people to shop online.

In previous years, demand for deals online has caused retailer websites to crash, or virtual queues to be put in place.

  • Get 3 months of free broadband with bundles

Virgin Media's Black Friday deals are among the best, with speedy package deals and data-busting SIM plans.

The telecom giant's sale is now underway, so there's no need to wait until the big day itself at the end of the month.

Virgin is offering a blanket deal-sweetener of 3 months of free service across its  this Black Friday.

Other goodies are rolled in, including an O2 phone SIM, and even free 3 months of free Disney+ with certain bundles.

You'll need to enter your postcode in order to see which services are available in your area.

  • Should I buy a TV on Black Friday or wait for Cyber Monday?

If you see an amazing TV deal on Black Friday, and one that’s the right screen size and budget for you, we suggest you don’t hang about until Cyber Monday.

If it’s a genuinely good price drop, it could easily sell out over that weekend.

On top of that, Cyber Monday isn’t the standalone event that it was historically.

Traditionally, it’s a day of online-only deals, in contrast to the in-store aisle-dashing on Black Friday itself.

However, these days, with online shopping booming, there’s very little difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

You might find a final wave of TV deals on the latter day - but if we’re being honest, it will likely be a last-gasp stock push from the retailers and we don’t think it’s worth banking on.
