GETTING optimum results from your workout depends in no small part on wearing the right kit for the task – and when it comes to essential gym gear then look no further than high-waisted leggings.

We’ve selected and tested the best high-waisted gym leggings available, whether your passion is pilates, yoga, or a sweat-inducing cardio workout. No matter what your asana or how many burpees you do, they’ll stay put.

If you're anything like us, you'll have long since discovered that a navel-grazing waistband is generally not the one when it comes to workouts and gym sessions.

The high-waisted silhouette on the other hand is far more practical: it keeps you feeling secure, doesn't run the risk of rolling down your hips mid-squat and it looks pretty darn adorable teamed with a cropped top or sports bra. What's not to love?

High-waisted leggings are great for other features too: think bum-shaping fits, tummy-smoothing panels and hidden pockets.

They also look good in and out of the gym, whether you go for classic black, a bold print or a statement colour. They're ideal for trips to the supermarket, school runs and coffee dates too.

In need of some inspo? Read on for our tried and tested selection of the best high-waisted gym leggings available to buy right now.

  • Fabletics Define PowerHold High-Waisted 7/8 Legging, £69 for non-members at Fabletics -

Pros: 23 different colour options, high compression, very flattering, sweat-wicking, chafe-resistant, UPF protection, pockets

Cons: Unlike the other Fabletics leggings, these don't come in regular, short and tall

Rating: 5/5

I never thought I'd say this, but I love these white leggings. When you think of light-coloured leggings, you automatically think they're going to be garish, see-through, and unflattering. However, these were one of my favourites to wear. And, if you don't want a pair of white leggings, they come in an impressive 23 different shades.

These leggings feel as if they're doing a lot of hard work, and that's because they are. Fabletics' PowerHold fabric is designed with the highest compression possible to hold you in without restricting your range of movement.

The cut of these leggings is perfect. The 7/8 length is great if you like to wear tube socks with your trainers, and the high-rise waist falls exactly where we like it to — just above the smallest part of your waist, but not so high that you look like Mickey Mouse.

Leg length: 7/8; Size range: XXS to 4X; Colours available: 23 colours; Fabric: Polyester and elastane

  • Fabletics Anywhere High-Waisted Leggings, £75 for non-members from Fabletics -

Pros: Impressive size range, available in 18 different colours, internal pocket, contouring bum seams, moisture-wicking, stretchy, supportive, flattering, no VPL

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

I can't fault these leggings from Fabletics. Made from the brand's Motion365 fabric, they're sleek, breathable, and figure-hugging, and the V-shaped seam on the back is particularly flattering for bums.

The pretty purple colour instantly caught my eye, and I think these are the perfect leggings for pretty much any physical activity in spring and summer — from yoga and stretching, to hiking or HIIT. The handy internal pocket at the back is great for storing things like your phone or keys.

The biggest selling point is that they come in regular, short and tall lengths and sizes XXS to 4x, so they're made to fit pretty much everybody.

Out of all the leggings I tried, these are the ones that made me feel the most safe and secure. You could count on them in even the hardest of workouts, they're squat-proof, sweat-proof and the waist-band will not roll down.

Well done, Fabletics.

BAM Enduro Bamboo Deep Waistband Leggings

  • BAM Enduro Bamboo Deep Waistband Leggings, £49 from BAM -

Pros: Flattering, sustainable, range of colours available, don't fall down, thick waistband, discrete logo

Cons: Tricky to get on

Rating: 4/5

BAM's Enduro leggings are made from a mix of sustainable bamboo, viscose, cotton and elastane. The result? A pair of eco-friendly leggings that are incredibly sculpting and supportive — particularly around the waist, thanks to the thick, long waistband that doesn't roll down.

I felt very secure in these leggings and found them to be very flattering.

I love the simple black colour – also available in six other bold colours and prints – and discrete logo, and would wear these for the gym or running errands.

The only issue I had (which shoppers in the site's review section agreed with) was that they're a little tricky to get on. Initially, I thought they weren't going to fit, but was pleasantly surprised when I wiggled into them and found they fit perfectly. You want them to be this figure-hugging to make sure they don't fall down during an arduous workout and to emphasise your curves.

I was also pleased that, even though these were tight, there was no VPL. So, whether you're wearing your biggest knickers or a seamless thong, nobody will know.

Leg length: Full; Size range: 8-18; Colours available: 7 colours and patterns; Fabric: Bamboo, viscose, organic cotton and elastane

BAM Mallea Yoga Leggings Full Length

  • BAM Mallea Yoga Leggings, £55 from BAM -

Pros: Stretchy fabric designed for yoga,  supportive, soft, breathable, no outside seam, no digging

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

Here at The Sun, we love BAM. The brand is the perfect choice if you're trying to be sustainable but don't want to skimp on quality, functionality and style.

These Mallea Yoga Leggings feel like regular fashion leggings on the skin. They're made from modal bamboo fabric, so they're soft, lightweight and have a weightless, barely-there feel.

But, that doesn't mean they're unsupportive. They still sculpt the body slightly and protect against chafing without making you feel constricted.

These leggings are finer, lighter and more breathable than regular gym leggings, but that's because they're developed with yoga in mind. You don't want anything that restricts your movement or breathing when you're on the mat, that's for sure.

Available in a range of colours and patterns both 7/8 length and full length, there's an option for every yogi.

Leg length: 7/8; Size range: 8 to 16; Colours available: 7; Fabric: Mallea modal fabric

  • BAM Flexa Seamless Running Leggings, £̶5̶2 £36.40 from BAM -

Pros: Flattering, super soft, stretchy, comfortable, sustainable

Cons: Only available in one colour

Rating: 5/5

BAM's Flexa Seamless Running Leggings reminded me of the woolly tights I used to wear to school – in the best way.

They're ribbed and incredibly cosy and soft. And, even though they do sculpt your legs, tummy and bum every so slightly, I wouldn't describe them as tight or clingy.

At first, I didn't think I'd like the pattern but as soon as I got the leggings on, I realised that the lines trick the eye and make you look slimmer. I'd wear these to the gym, on a walk, or even just relaxing around the house.

  • Free People High-Rise 7/8 Length Good Karma Leggings, £78 from Free People -

Pros: Flattering, super soft, stretchy ribbed fabric, comfortable, come in a variety of colours

Cons: Expensive

Rating: 5/5

If you're bored of plain black leggings, Free People's Good Karma Leggings come in 18 different shades. I chose this bright Red Apple shade, and I'm so pleased I did because it'll stand out against my collection of neutral gym trainers and tops.

The leggings themselves are incredibly flattering, made of a ribbed knit fabric that holds in your waist and shapes your tummy, legs and bum – without looking or feeling like you're wearing typical heavy-duty shaping leggings.

They're so comfortable that I wear them when I'm working from home.

These are great for working out and fashion purposes, and I've got a lot of wear out of mine so far (and will be purchasing them in multiple colours, from black to Barbiecore pink).

They also have SPF30 UV Protection, making them ideal for outdoor fitness sessions or just wearing them out and about.

They may be a little pricey at £78, but since they're so high quality and versatile, they're well worth the splurge.

  • SEFI Timeless Leggings 7/8, £72 from SEFI -

Pros: Sculpting fabric is very flattering, ultra high-waisted, supportive, soft, stretchy, breathable, sweat-wicking, contouring detail on back, no VPL

Cons: Only available in 3 colours

Rating: 5/5

I've owned this pair of leggings for around nine months, and they've become a wardrobe staple. To me, they're the legging equivalent of my favourite Levi Ribcage jeans — that's how high-waisted they are.

These have the highest waistband of all the leggings I tried, so they almost feel like you're wearing shape-wear and leggings in one (which is ideal for the days when you're particularly bloated).

They support your legs, bums and tummy nicely without feeling too tight and restrictive  – unlike a lot of seamless and sculpting gym leggings on the market.

The soft and stretchy fabric is breathable and I find that it feels cool and dry on the skin, no matter how sweaty I get during a workout.

These are the leggings I reach for when I'm WFH or popping to the post office, as well as when I'm heading to a gym class.

Leg length: 7/8; Size range: XXS to XL; Colours available: 3 colours; Fabric: Polyamide and elastane

  • SEFI Define Cross Over Leggings, £62 from SEFI -

Pros: Impressive size range, super soft fabric, flattering V waistband, sculpting, lightweight, moisture-wicking and squat-proof

Cons: Only available in 2 shades

Rating: 5/5

SEFI's new Define Cross Over Leggings have my heart. The unique waistband is not only really pretty, but I found that it enhanced my curves.

The differently-shaped waistband doesn't take away any sculpting power, either. These leggings hold your tummy in without being too tight – and they do the same to the legs and bum.

The fabric is silky smooth and exactly what you want to wear for maximum comfort, whether you're going to the gym or just hanging out at home.

Plus, it's lightweight, moisture-wicking, and squat-proof, so you won't have any embarrassing sweat patches or ripping accidents when you're going hard during a workout.

  • MP Women's Shape Seamless Leggings, £44.99 £19.99 from Myprotein -

Pros: Sculpting, flattering, comes in XXS to L, seamless

Cons: Waistband rolls down, tricky to get on

Rating: 3/5

If you're looking for a solid pair of seamless black leggings for less than £50, go for these from Myprotein.

Admittedly, I had a struggle getting them on and found that the waistband does roll down a little when you bend over. However, these leggings are very flattering and do have sculpting powers.

They're a little more low-waisted than the other options on this list, but still cover the main portion of the stomach and hold you in.

I'll be wearing these on my daily walks, for sure.

Leg length: Full; Size range: XXS to L; Colours available: 4 colours; Fabric: Nylon and elastane

TALA DayFlex High Waisted Legging

  • TALA DayFlex High Waisted Legging, £59 from TALA -

Pros: Available in 2XS to XL, available in full length and 7/8, available in four stylish muted shades, very, very easy to put on, waistband doesn't slip, supportive on tummy, comfortable, sweetheart contouring, sustainable (made from 75% recycled nylon)

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

TALA's DayFlex leggings are flawless. They are silky smooth and you won't have a struggle slipping into them.

I was amazed at how easy these were to put on. The product description says these give a 'naked feel that glides on', and that's not an exaggeration.

The waistband is the ideal tightness and width for holding in your tummy without digging into the skin, and the V seam or sweetheart contouring on the back is very flattering on the bum.

These will be my go-to for day-to-day life, styled with an oversized slogan sweatshirt and dad trainers. And, I'll be wearing them for all kinds of workouts — from yoga to boxing.

If you're not into a full-length leg, these are also available in 7/8 length.

Leg length: Full or 7/8; Size range: 2XS to XL; Colours available: 4 colours; Fabric: Recycled nylon and Lycra

  • TALA SkinLuxe High Waisted Flared Legging, £59 £29.50 from TALA -

Pros: Flattering flared leg, waist band doesn't fall down, super soft, easy to put on, comfortable, back pocket with zip, lightweight, sustainable (made from recycled nylon)

Cons: Only available in 3 colours

Rating: 5/5

TALA's SkinLuxe flared leggings are the trendiest pair of gym leggings I've ever owned.

If, like me, you prefer flared trousers in your day-to-day life, you'll love these. They're super high-waisted and sculpting, and I find that they accentuate curves without hugging your body too tightly.

The flared leg is very flattering on your legs, too.

I wear this pair when WFH – and, with a pair of chunky trainers, they're great for running errands and hanging out with friends in comfort and style.

They're also perfect for gym sessions on days when you feel extra bloated or don't want to rock something skin-tight. The high waist does not budge and will stay put, even if you're hunched over and moving rapidly during a spin class.

Leg length: 30"; Size range: 2XS to 4XL; Colours available: 3 colours; Fabric: Recycled nylon and Lycra

lululemon Align™ High-Rise Pant

The lululemon Align leggings are a popular favourite.

  • lululemon Align™ High-Rise Pant, £88 from lululemon -

Pros: Lightweight and breathable, waistband doesn't dig, but also stays put, super soft, easy to put on, comfortable, form-fitting and flattering, available in sizes UK 4 to 24, available in 18 colours

Cons: Will show VPL, if you're wearing the wrong knickers

Rating: 5/5

lululemon has a reputation for producing high-quality, luxury activewear, and these leggings did not disappoint.

They're silky smooth (or as lululemon puts it, buttery-soft) and feel amazing on the skin. Plus, of all of the leggings I tried, these were the easiest to slip into.

They're form-fitting but very comfortable — I'd definitely wear these while chilling at home, as well as for hardcore workouts.

The waistband is perfect, too. It provides support and softly skims your curves without being so tight that you feel as if the skin around your ribcage is bulging over the top.

The size and colour range are also great. Just make sure you're wearing the right underwear, as this fabric is so lightweight and soft that it will show VPL if your knickers aren't seamless too.

Leg length: Full; Size range: UK 4 to 24; Colours available: 18 colours; Fabric: Nylon and lycra elastane

Pour Moi Energy Printed Mesh Panel Legging

28
  • Energy Printed Mesh Panel Legging - Navy Fern, £35 £30 from Pour Moi -

Pros: Pretty prints, stretchy, perfect waist point, slimming on the calves, mesh cutouts, comfortable, supportive, lightweight fabric

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

If you want to make a style statement at the gym, Pour Moi has some really lovely high-waisted gym leggings available to shop right now.

Decorated with a pretty floral motif, these mesh panel leggings are perfect for adding a splash of colour and print on the treadmill. And I found them to be one of the most flattering of the bunch. They have the optimum waist height and leg length, and the mesh inserts are incredibly slimming on the calves.

Designed for running, spinning, HIIT and more, there's a hidden pocket and a side mesh pocket – handy for keeping your phone and keys on you, if you're exercising outside.

Meanwhile, the sweat-wicking fabric and mesh inserts should keep you feeling cool and comfortable, so you can turn up the speed or resistance.

Leg length: Full; Size range: 8 to 18; Colours available: 6 colours; Fabric: Polyester and elastane

WUKA Period Leggings

The WUKA leggings support your menstrual cycle.

  • WUKA Perform Leggings, £49.99 £24.99 from WUKA -

Pros: Big size range, no VPL, can hold 15ml of blood (around two to three tampons worth), don't need to wear knickers, stretchy, perfect waist height, slimming sports fit, comfortable, supportive, lightweight fabric, recycled fabric

Cons: Only available in one colour

Rating: 5/5

I tested these exciting squat-proof, sweat-proof and period-proof leggings from WUKA, which feature seamless period pants integrated into the leggings for a leak-free workout.

The sustainable leggings feature a handy pocket for your phone or keys, they're buttery soft and are made from a flattering matte-finish recycled polyester.

When I first put them on, I didn't even notice the built-in period knickers. And because they're so lightweight and silky, I didn't trust that they'd do the job.

However, I was pleasantly surprised. I tested them out on day two of my period, and although it felt odd to be wearing only a pair of leggings for a half-hour cycle, my flow was completely absorbed and it was a relief to exercise while feeling dry and protected.

Whilst designed to completely replace a pad or tampon, I think the leggings would be great to use alongside a tampon or menstrual cup, as you'll have peace of mind with the knowledge there's a backup in place.

The leggings can absorb up to three tampons worth of liquid, there's no VPL and they can be washed at up to 40C with your regular cycle.

At just under £50, they're on the expensive side if you want a few pairs to wear daily on your period – but are currently on sale, with 50% off.

If you don't work out daily, are happy to invest in a few pairs, or don't mind using your washing machine frequently then I'd recommend them – especially as they're comfortable and breathable, with no tell-tale outlines.

Marks & Spencer Good Move Go Move Leggings Full Length

  • Marks & Spencer Good Move Go Move Leggings Full Length, £27.50 from M&S -

Pros: Comfortable, flattering, breathable, sweat-wicking, elasticated waist, tight fit

Cons: VPL, only available in 5 colours

Rating: 4/5

When I first stepped into these, I found them a little tricky to get on. However, I quite liked the tight fight once they were on.

M&S says these are meant to feel like a second skin, and I agree.

They don't restrict your movement, but they still support your wobbly bits and are flattering on the bum and thighs. The elasticated waistband with an internal tie is ideal for ensuring you get the perfect fit too, as I initially found the leggings to be a little loose on the waist but perfect on the bum and thighs.

I found them comfortable and easy to wear and work out in.

But, the one downside is that it did show a VPL at the front quite visibly. You'd need to wear a seamless thong with these.

Leg length: Full; Size range: 6 to 24; Colours available: 5; Fabric: Recycled polyester and elastane

  • MP Women’s Tempo Ultra Leggings, £44 from £17.99 from My Protein -

Pros: Sweat-wicking and lightweight, odour-control technology, comfortable, stretchy, soft, flattering, smoothing effect

Cons: VPL, only available in three shades

Rating; 4/5

The thing that stands out about the MP Temp Ultra leggings is that they're super soft and feel like velvet on the skin.

The contouring stitching on the back is flattering on the bum and thighs, and it has a comfortable but close fit from the waistband down to the ankle.

However, I did find that I had a noticeable VPL when I wore these. So, you'd have to team them with some seamless underwear.

Another interesting thing about these leggings is that they've been treated with Polygiene StayFresh; an odour-control technology that prevents odour-causing bacteria from growing on the fabric. Genius.

As well as this clever feature, I noticed that I stayed cool while working out in these. The fabric is lightweight and sweat-wicking, so I didn't get any embarrassing sweat patches.

Leg length: Full; Size range: XS to XXL; Colours available: 3, Fabric: Polyester and elastane

  • Marks & Spencer Goodmove Go Perform Sculpting Leggings, £35 from M&S -

Pros: Flattering, comfortable, shaping/slimming, stretchy, soft, cool and breathable, deep pockets

Cons: VPL, only available in 2 colours

Rating: 4/5

The first thing that struck me about these M&S leggings was the fabric of the waistband. It has a cool, thin and even crispy feel to it, just like you'd expect from a pair of shaping knickers.

The design on the waistband and down the legs is almost corset-like, giving these leggings an impressive slimming effect.

You do get a little bit of VPL and the waistband rolls ever so slightly when you sit, but overall I'm a big fan of these leggings.

They're comfortable, flattering and ideal for hitting the gym or working out at home.

Leg length: Full; Size range: 6-24; Colours available: 2, Fabric: Polyamide and elastane

  • Marks & Spencer Good Move Go Balance High Waisted Yoga Leggings, £25 from M&S -

Pros: Flattering, comfortable, shaping/slimming, stretchy, soft, cool and breathable, V waist

Cons: Only available in black

Rating: 5/5

These leggings were one of my favourites for yoga and everyday use.

As soon as you take them out of the packaging, you'll notice that they're incredibly soft to the touch. They're cosy when you wear them, but you won't overheat during a workout.

The best thing though, is the flattering V-shaped waistband. It helps to make your stomach look flatter and your waist smaller, while the close-fitting fabric smooths over and supports any bumpy areas.

I'd wear these every day if I could, and they're pretty affordable too.

  • Power High-Waisted Gym Leggings, £88 from Sweaty Betty -

Pros: Shaping, sculpting, sweat-wicking, squat-proof

Cons: Pricier than others, just 2 colours

Rating: 5/5

Sweaty Betty's latest Power High-Waisted Gym Leggings promise everything: compression, bum-sculpting, sweat-wicking, squat-proofing and they're supportive to boot. I took them for a test run to see if they're worth splashing out for.

As a size 10-12, when the medium arrived and it looked small, I was worried about whether it would fit. But once I pulled them on, I instantly fell in love with the skin-tight sculpting support and softer-than-soft feel.

They rise right up, just below your ribs, holding you in tightly whilst keeping you comfy in the process – they're so flexible that it feels like you're not wearing anything at all.

From yoga to running, there's no workout that these leggings won't assist you through, as they're sweat-wicking. They're even complete with trusty pockets on either side that are so seamless, that you hardly notice your phone or keys in there.

In short, I'm obsessed.

28

  • Spanx Booty Boost 7/8 Leggings, £88 from Selfridges -

Pros: Flattering, contouring fabric on bum, waist doesn't fall down, thick waist band to hold in tummy, comfortable

Cons: Expensive

Rating: 5/5

Spanx's Booty Boost leggings have just become one of my go-to pairs.

They're incredibly flattering, using a wide contoured waistband to suck in your tummy and rear-firming fabric to shape lift your bum (as the name suggests).

Despite all of this sculpting, the leggings have no centre seam so they avoid the dreaded camel toe and come complete with a cotton gusset so you can wear these with no underwear to stay VPL-free.

Even though, as you'd expect from Spanx, these leggings behave like shapewear, they're comfortable and stretchy. They don't have that typical compression feeling that makes you feel as if the leggings are too tight and bursting at the seams.

Other perks include a hidden pocket (big enough to fit a key or card) and a waistband that doesn't fold over as you move.

Leg length: 7/8; Size range: XS-XXXL; Colours available: 1 colour; Fabric: Nylon and elastane

Acai Outdoor Softshell Leggings

  • Acai Outdoor Softshell Leggings, £55 from Acai -

Pros: Waterproof, flattering, drawstring waist to ensure perfect fit, handy zip pocket, comfortable, stretchy

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

When you live in the rainy UK, it's important to own clothing that will protect you from the elements. After all, we only experience a couple of months of true summer weather every year.  This doesn't have to mean going out in macs and traditional waterproof clothing, though. These leggings from Acai are shower-resistant, meaning they repel liquid and dry extremely quickly.

Sadly, since it was the height of summer at the time of reviewing these, I didn't get the chance to try these leggings out in the rain. But, I love how they fit and can see how the lightweight and breathable softshell fabric is perfect for hot, cold and rainy days.

They're stretchy, so your movement won't be restricted, and the fabric is snag-proof, so they're suitable for outdoor activities like trail running, hiking, cycling and so on.

To maintain the leggings' waterproof properties, use Grangers Wash + Repel Liquid every three to five washes.

Leg length: Full; Size range: 6-18; Colours available: 4 colours (black, green, navy and aubergine); Fabric: Nylon and Spandex

YANA Active 2.0 Combat Green Leggings

Shine with these shiny YANA active leggings.

  • YANA Active 2.0 Combat Green Leggings, £70 £35 from YANA Active -

Pros: Stylish high shine finish, sustainable, suncream and oil resistant, UV protection, 99% squat proof, concealed pocket

Cons: Only available in sizes 6 to 16, only available in one colour, will show VPL if not wearing seamless underwear

Rating: 3/5

YANA Active's leggings are made in the UK from 78% recycled fabric, so these are a sustainable choice. They're pretty high-tech too, since they're resistant to suncream and oil, and offer UV protection.

What I love most about these leggings though, is that they're a total fashion statement. They have a shiny finish, making them look more like disco pants than gym leggings. And, they've got a concealed pocket in the waistband to fit your key or a credit card, so you could wear them to the gym or a party — it's up to you.

They're a little lower-waisted than I like and the fabric is very lightweight, which means they aren't the most sculpting on the list. However, they're still fun, practical and flattering.

These will show your knicker line though, so you'd probably have to team them with a seamless sports thong.

Leg length: Full; Size range: XS to XL; Colours available: 1 colour; Fabric: Recycled nylon and Lycra

Contur Smooth Move Leggings

Contur's leggings are super high waisted.

  • Contur Smooth Move Leggings, £59.99 from Know The Origin -

Pros: High shine finish, super high waisted, breathable, supportive, flattering, comfortable, excellent coverage, UV sun protection, resistant to sun cream and oil

Cons: Only available in sizes 6 to 16, waistband rolls down a little bit

Rating: 4/5

Contur's Smooth Move leggings have a high-shine finish and are super high-waisted, giving them a fun '80s feel.

As well as being stylish, they're stretchy, comfortable, and easy to get on and off (which you can't always say for this type of legging).

Crafted using a sustainable techno fabric and ECONYL regenerated Nylon, these leggings will support and enhance your figure through any workout, all while remaining breathable and keeping you UV-protected.

  • Love Leggings Energise Sports Leggings, £35 £31.50 from Lovall -

Pros: Flattering seam design and compression fabric, practical pockets, comfortable, supportive, lightweight fabric, sweat-wicking, available in regular, tall and petite lengths, available in sizes 6 to 28, recycled fabric

Cons: Waistband isn't as high rise as I'd like it to be, only available in two colours

Rating: 4/5

Lovall's (previously known as Love Leggings) products are the most accessible leggings I've tried, purely because they're available in sizes 6 to 28 and regular, tall and petite lengths. There's truly a size to fit pretty much everyone perfectly.

Besides the sizing, the best thing about the Energise Sports Leggings is the four handy pockets that are large enough to fit your phone, purse and keys.

In terms of the fit, these leggings sit just below the smallest part of your waist which is really comfortable – but I would personally prefer them to be slightly higher-waisted.

They're flattering and sculpting on the legs, thanks to the clever seam design and compression fabric.

You could wear these for anything from a fast-paced run (the fabric is sweat-wicking and lightweight) to relaxing on the sofa.

  • Lovall X Olivia Bowen Ultimate Seamless, £34 from Lovall -

Pros: Amazing size range, available in petite, regular and tall lengths, variety of colours, comfortable, stretchy, soft, smoothing effect

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

Lovall's collaboration with Olivia Bowen birthed these seamless leggings, and I feel confident when I wear them.

They have a smoothing effect, which is great if you're concerned about cellulite and bumpy skin. These act a little bit like shape-wear, with a cinching section over each thigh to sculpt your upper legs.

I also found that these leggings have the ideal waistband, helping to slim your midsection without causing any fat to spill over the top.

They're a delight to wear too, since they're made from buttery soft, stretchy fabric.

As mentioned in the previous Lovall leggings review above, this brand is super inclusive. These leggings are available in regular, petite and tall in sizes 6 to 22, and you can get them in black, beige, brown, teal, mauve and sage.

No complaints.

  • AYBL Empower Seamless Leggings,  Perform Leggings, £40 from AYBL -

Pros: Decent size range, no VPL, slimming design, stretchy, comfortable, supportive, lightweight fabric, available in different colours

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

If you're after a pair of leggings that will make you look leaner and enhance your curves, choose these from AYBL.

The clever design on the back and sides slims your thighs and makes your bum look a little rounder, while the super high waistband cinches in your waist and makes your tummy look flatter.

They're not only the ultimate figure-enhancing leggings, but they're also great to work out in. The waistband doesn't roll down and the fabric is stretchy and supportive enough to do intense HIIT or even yoga in.

Overall, I have no complaints.

  •  P.E Nation In Play Legging in black, £96 £48 from P.E Nation -

Pros: Shiny fabric, compressive feel, squat proof, mid-rise, trendy/sporty design with logo, comfortable, supportive, lightweight fabric, sustainable

Cons: Only available in one colour, more expensive than other brands

Rating: 5/5

These leggings are the perfect combination of trendy and practical. They have a cool sporty design and disco-shine finish but are strong and stretchy enough to withstand even the deepest squats.

The contrasting white waistband is lower-waisted than a lot of the other leggings in this article, but it sits at a very flattering position — well above the hips but below the smallest part of your waist.

Plus, the ⅞ length is ideal for showing off your new trainers (even better if they’re '90s-style dad trainers).

They’re on the pricier side, but if you’re looking for a pair of leggings that will last forever and can be worn for almost any occasion, you won’t regret the splurge.

Leg length: 7/8; Size range: XXS to XXXL; Colours available: 1 colour, but similar styles available in different colours; Fabric: Recycled polyester and elastane

Amazon's viral SEASUM Honeycomb High Waist Gym Leggings

  • SEASUM Honeycomb High Waist Gym Leggings, from £16.99 from Amazon -

Pros: Choice of colours, soft

Cons: Shaping not as dramatic as hoped

Rating: 5/5

Whether you've seen them on singer Lizzo or all over your TikTok feed, Amazon's Seasum leggings went viral for their butt-sculpting superpowers – and for good reason.

Priced at just £16.99, these honeycomb textured leggings have a v-cut hip line design to lift and mould your silhouette. I tried them out to see if it's worth jumping on the bandwagon.

First off, I was impressed with the 27 different styles to choose from: there are colourful tie-dye options and more toned-down staple colours too – I chose black and pink tie-dye.

When they quickly arrived vacuum packed (some styles qualify for Prime next-day delivery), the softness of the stretchy waffle-like fabric and the vibrant colour garnered points for quality.

As a tall size 10, I ordered a large to ensure they were long enough – yet a size medium would have given extra butt-lift, as I found the leggings comfy and flattering, but didn't see the dramatic shaping that TikTok raves about.

As sports-come-loungewear leggings, they do the job well, but you need a Lizzo-level butt to expect those kinds of results.

Where to buy high-waisted gym leggings?

Thanks to being popular for both support and comfort, high-waisted gym leggings are everywhere on the high street or at activewear brands online, including:

How much do high-waisted gym leggings cost?

There are so many different price points when it comes to high-waisted gym leggings.

Brands such as Lululemon and Sweaty Betty offer styles for almost £100, whereas places like MP, Pour Moi and high street shops have cheaper options available.

More expensive styles tend to last longer and are typically made from thicker materials that are more flattering. But this isn't always the case, so read our handy guide to the best women's high-waisted gym leggings above, for advice. And, if you can't afford them at full price, then be sure to keep an eye on deals and shop them in the sales!

Should you size down in gym leggings?

Gym leggings are supposed to be tight-fitting, but that doesn't mean you should size down. Always buy gym leggings in your actual size, because the brand will understand that gym leggings are supposed to be curve-hugging and will have designed the leggings accordingly.

Even gym leggings in your size will sometimes be a struggle to slip into, so sizing down might mean they won't fit you.

Are high-waisted gym leggings flattering?

Everyone's body is different, and different styles of clothes look different on everyone. Generally, high-waisted gym leggings are thought to be flattering on everyone. They're designed to accentuate curves and support your tummy, bum and legs throughout a workout, so they do a similar job to shapewear.

Play around with different waistband heights, leg length and leg fit to find out which style of high-waisted gym leggings suits you best. After trying out all of the leggings in this article, we found super high-waisted leggings and flares to be very flattering. However, someone else might prefer 7/8 length leggings and a high waist to sit slightly lower than the smallest part of the waist.

How are high-waisted leggings supposed to fit?

High-waisted leggings are supposed to be tight-fitting. They're meant to sit around the smallest part of your waist (or slightly higher or lower) comfortably, without digging into the skin or falling. They should be tight across your bum and legs, without any sagging or loose areas, but not so tight that they restrict movement.

How to prevent camel toeing in high-waisted leggings?

In truth, the possibility of a camel toe comes down to what leggings you're wearing.

Higher quality ones are less likely to cling to areas that you don't want them to.

Make sure you're wearing seamless knickers that fit you well to reduce the likeliness of a camel toe.

Just make sure you feel comfortable and have pulled them up so that they sit at a high waist, but not too high – remember, a camel toe isn't the end of the world and no one is likely to notice anyway.

What to look for in high-waisted leggings?

Comfort is key when shopping for high-waisted leggings.

Get a pair that makes you feel as though you aren't wearing any at all.

Longevity is a must too. For example, you can save money sometimes by purchasing more expensive styles that won't need constant replacing.
