What the Royals’ go-to jeans REALLY say about them according to a fashion pro & the Duchess with a secret ‘playful’ side
THE royal family are the picture of elegance when out in public and even give masterclasses in how to make jeans look regal too.
From Princess Kate’s posh pair to Meghan’s ripped version, a fashion expert has revealed how each woman elevates their style, even when in denim, and what it can reveal about their personality - and yours...
Fashion editor Amber Graafland told Fabulous what we can learn from the likes of Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh and down-to-earth Zara Tindall’s jean choices…
Kate’s ‘timeless’ skinny jeans
Meaning - you are classic and refined
Princess Kate is the benchmark when it comes to refined dressing, and she often proves how jeans firmly have a place in the royal wardrobe.
Amber shared: “Princess Kate is a big fan of a skinny jean.
“Her style is timeless, and classic and jeans choice reflects this perfectly.
More on the royal family
“Adept at knowing what suits her physique she knows that skinnies flatter her figure and that they work with trainers and wellies for official engagements when she is required to dress down. Equally important.
“Kate also wears them in her down time, often with a Barbour or a smart blazer proving how versatile they are.”
Zara Tindall’s 'fashionable' boot cut jeans
Meaning - you are fashionable but functional
Princess Anne’s daughter, 43, is fast becoming one of the most stylish royals having undergone a Kate-inspired glow up, according to a fashion expert.
In recent years, Olympic horse-rider Zara, who previously appeared most at home in her countryside sportswear, has “undergone a style overhaul”.
Amber added: “One thing Zara and Kate don’t share however is their taste in jeans.
“Zara’s style is fashionable, but functional to reflect her sporty lifestyle and she also dresses to suit her body shape.
“The magic of a boot cut jean is that they create the effect of slimmer thighs and elongate the leg.
“Zara, the sports woman, also knows they are perfect for wearing over her favourite Chelsea and ankle boots.”
Meghan’s ‘California girl’ ripped jeans
Meaning - you are a girl-next-door
When she stepped out for her first public event as the girlfriend of Prince Harry at the Invictus Games in 2017, she made a statement in choosing to wear ripped jeans.
Amber shared how the garment “works perfectly with her laid-back California girl aesthetic.”
She explained: “Meghan’s style is polished, but 'perfectly' undone, which is why she loves a pair of ripped jeans.
“A pair of ripped jeans and a crisp white shirt fits into this perfectly look, hence they are a favourite go-to look.
“Comfortable in flat shoes she often teams them with ballet pumps or a flat sandal.
“Not many people can make ripped jeans look chic, but Meghan always manages to look glamorous in them.
“The key, she may look 'undone' but it's all been carefully orchestrated.
“When it comes to jeans Meghan likes that slightly thrown together girl next door look.”
Sophie’s ‘understated’ cropped jeans
Meaning - you are confident yet playful
Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, became one of the late Queen’s closest confidantes - and has proved time and time again to be a dependable member of the royal family.
And when it comes to her fashion, Sophie rarely misses the mark and understands the brief.
Amber shared: “Sophie’s style is confident, yet playful.
“One item you will always find in her wardrobe is a pair of kick flare cropped jeans.

“Sophie knows the key to getting this look right is showing off a bit of toned ankle and teaming them with a wedge heel to add extra height and elongate the leg.
“Sophie has established her own style, yet she isn’t afraid to experiment with different styles that make her look timeless yet contemporary.”
What is Princess Kate's signature fashion style?
WHEN it comes to dressing for public engagements Princess Kate has formulated a highly successful signature style, according to fashion expert Amber Graafland
The princess knows exactly what styles flatter her figure and while she may mix her favourite designers with the odd bit of high street, the basic principles remain the same.
The biggest benefit of this confident approach is that it allows her to recycle outfits. Kate is often seen re-wearing bespoke outfits by go-to designers McQueen, Ellis Saab and Jenny Packham.
The other huge plus side is that it has allowed her to amass an impressive handbag collection.
While the exact grand total has never been revealed, it is estimated that Kate owns at least 110 styles.
For most mere mortals that sounds like a huge amount, but if you consider that the princess attends upwards of 100 public engagements a year, it’s not actually that ridiculous.
Kate’s collection includes styles by Jimmy Choo, Prada, McQueen, Chanel, Asprey, Aspinal of London and Ellie Saab to name but a few.
