What do we know about King Charles’ cancer diagnosis?

It was confirmed on February 5, 2024 that King Charles has cancer after the disease was found during a prostate procedure the previous month.

The King was expected to be discharged after two nights - concern was sparked when this stay was extended, with the Palace announcing that the King would miss royal engagements for a month whilst he recovers.

He was eventually discharged from hospital on January 29, 2024.

Charles was pictured with Queen Camilla attending the morning service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham in his first public appearance on February 4, 2024,  following his treatment.

It is not currently known what type of cancer the King has.

Did King Charles have surgery?

Charles underwent a corrective procedure on his enlarged prostate at the London Clinic.

This was also the same hospital where the Princess of Wales recovered after her abdominal surgery.

Buckingham Palace said on January 26, 2024: "The King was this morning admitted to a London hospital for scheduled treatment.

"His Majesty would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes over the past week.

"He is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness."

What have the Palace said?

The palace released a statement on Friday April 26, 2024 saying that King Charles has been deemed well enough to return to public duties.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis.

“To help mark this milestone, The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment centre next Tuesday, where they will meet with medical specialists and patients.

“This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead.”

The palace confirmed that the King’s treatment is ongoing but doctors are pleased with his progress.

They said: “His Majesty’s treatment programme will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties.

“Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery.”

Before this, King Charles stepped back from public duties as he recovered.

At the time a statement from Buckingham Palace said a "separate issue of concern was noted" after he underwent a prostate operation last month.

"During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted.

"Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

"Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."
