DONALD Trump's Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh looks set for the lifetime job as swing senators say they back him.
The FBI had been tasked by the US President to look into allegations of sexual misconduct levelled against the judge by three women.
But after Republican Senator Susan Collins and Joe Manchin, a Democrat, both indicated their backing his seat looks all but confirmed.
Kavanaugh's confirmation would give conservatives a solid 5-4 majority in future legal battles on contentious issues such as abortion rights, immigration and gay and transgender rights.
A final vote is scheduled for Saturday after university professor Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were high school students in Maryland in 1982.
Two other women also made accusations of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh in the 1980s.
He denied those accusations, as well as Ford's, in angry testimony to a Senate committee.
Earlier this week, Trump mocked Dr Ford and the "evil people" trying to destroy judge Kavanaugh at a rally in Mississippi.
In theory it means he could be sworn in and sitting in the court by Tuesday.
Trump tweeted his approval of the Senate vote on Friday.
He wrote: "Very proud of the U.S. Senate for voting 'YES' to advance the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh!"
