Donald Trump claims Russia will try to rig mid-term elections AGAINST him because nobody has been tougher on Putin than him
PRESIDENT of the United States Donald Trump has claimed Russia will rig the mid-term elections AGAINST him - as he's been "tough" on Russia.
The US is to go to the polls on November 6 to vote in the mid-terms to elect members of the US congress, House of Representatives and some of the senate seats.
The House of Representatives is currently a Republican-held majority, but a sway towards a Democrat-held House could spell trouble for Trump.
In a bizarre tweet earlier today, the President claimed Russia will attempt to influence the upcoming elections as they "don't want Trump" - because no other US President has been tougher than him on Russia.
The tweet comes just weeks after the two leaders met in Helsinki, Finland - where Trump sided with Putin over the findings of his own US intelligence agencies who alleged the Kremlin "disrupted" the 2016 election in his favour, but later back-tracked on his comments saying he "misspoke".
In the tweet, he said: "I’m very concerned that Russia will be fighting very hard to have an impact on the upcoming Election."
He continued: "Based on the fact that no President has been tougher on Russia than me, they will be pushing very hard for the Democrats. They definitely don’t want Trump!"
Previously, standing just feet away from the Russian president in Helsinki, Finland, he said Putin "just said it is not Russia... I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be".
Just one day after the summit, he told reporters: "The sentence should have been, 'I don't see any reason why I wouldn't, or why it wouldn't be Russia'.
"I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place."
Even then he made a point of adding: "It could be other people also. A lot of people out there. There was no collusion at all."
The phrase "there was no collusion at all" could be seen scrawled in thick marker pen on the President's typed statement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is due to meet Trump at the White House in the Autumn following an invitation from the President.
