African wives are making their lazy husbands pay them for sex… and women’s rights groups love it
According to reports, over 30,000 women have put a tax on sex with their husbands, to get them to pay up for household expenses
AFRICAN wives are making their lazy husbands pay them for sex - in a controversial move to get their spouses to cough up for household expenses and chores, it's claimed.
The move by emboldened women in Uganda has been praised by women's rights organisations.
Mother's Union in Uganda said 150 women first reported demanding money from their husbands for sex in 2015 - but by 2016, the number had climbed to 5,000.
Now 30,000 women have started billing their partners for romps, with officials estimating it could be higher, .
Some husbands have reportedly agreed to pay up and others have started doing household chores.
But other have refused to cough up and there have even been reports of rows over the practice descending into domestic violence incidents.
Religious leaders and government ministers have called the practice "immoral and irreligious".
But rights organisations have applauded the move, arguing that "any approach that gets irresponsible husbands to contribute towards the welfare of their families is justified".
Tina Musuya, executive director of the nonprofit Centre for Domestic Violence Prevention, said: "If the men are irresponsible and it is the only way their wives can get money from them to run the homes, let them go ahead and tax sex."
Market vendor Beatrice Atim told OZY she started charging her husband for sex so he wouldn't take her for granted.
He used to leave for work without giving her money for expenses.
But she said now he pays "without quarrel because he knows the money is to be used at home".
And teacher Annet Nanozi told the site her husband had "stopped paying for the family's food", and was spending his money on alcohol so she decided to "teach him a lesson".
But shop attendant Philip Byabasaija reportedly said it was unacceptable for a wife to charge her husband.
He said: "That is stupid. How can my wife charge me for sex?"
When his wife demanded money, he is quoted as saying he beat her up and she gave up asking.
But activists argue it's "unfair to to expect a woman to enjoy sex with a man who doesn’t pay the family’s bills".
