The officer has since been treated and released, according to a statement released by the .

Law enforcement has not shared the identities of the shooter or victims, nor indicated the motivation for the violence.

In a conference, law enforcement told the press they exchanged gunfire with the suspect before taking them into custody.

Police Chief Ryan Lee stated reports started coming in around 1:50pm local time that “at least one person was shot and down.”

An intersection near the mall was temporarily closed down as officers investigated a second crime scene related to the incident.

Investigators believe there was only one shooter and the area is no longer on alert.

Lee said a motive remains unknown as he branded any speculation "premature".

He said: "I cannot stress enough how traumatic this event is for the community at large, as well as for those that were witnesses, or are the families of those involved or involved themselves."

"Never should one have to, or does one expect when they're saying goodbye to a loved one who is headed to work, who is headed out to shop, that they'll get a call like they did today," Mayor Lauren McLean told reporters.

"Countless people found themselves in a situation they never would have or should have expected."

"You showed in a tough and chaotic moment how much you care and what you're willing to do to support and care for strangers," Mayor McLean added.

Cheri Gypin, 60, is a Boise resident and told the Associated Press she was walking through the mall with a friend when they heard shots ring out.

"My friend was trying to process it," said Gypin.

"I just looked at her and said, 'We've got to run.'

"So we just ran and kept running until we got to the outer perimeter of the parking lot."

Idaho Governor Brad Little said: "Those injured in today’s unthinkable shooting at the Boise Towne Square Mall are in my prayers. The State of Idaho stands prepared to assist the Boise Police Department as they investigate the shooting.

"Idahoans are deeply appreciative of our brave men and women of law enforcement and our first responders."

The Boise Towne Square Mall is known as the largest retail complex in Idaho and features more than 150 stores and restaurants.
