Dog owners warned as pet almost dies after eating ‘toxic’ hot cross buns
Labradoodle Ralph was on holiday with his owners in Penicuik, Scotland, when he had to be rushed to an emergency vet
A GREEDY dog swiped hot cross buns off a plate and almost died — as the treats contain ingredients toxic to the animals.
Labradoodle Ralph was rushed to an emergency clinic in the middle of the night by his owners.
Keith Jeary, 65, said he knew the pup was in trouble after his snack as the Easter buns are made with raisins and nutmeg.
He said: “When I saw the plate with nothing on it the alarm bells rang.
"Knowing how dangerous raisins can be, we weren’t going to chance it.”
Keith, on holiday in Penicuik, Midlothian, took poorly Ralph to Vets Now in Edinburgh — where the pet brought up 12 raisins and the pastry.
He luckily managed to make a full recovery.
The clinic’s Laura Playforth issued a warning to dog owners over the incident.
She said: “It’s unclear what causes the toxic effects but just one can kill so real caution should be taken with foods, such as hot cross buns, that contain them.

“It’s also worth bearing in mind that inducing vomiting doesn’t clear 100% of the contents of a dog’s stomach so there’s no guarantee this form of treatment will always be successful.”
