Durham university hands out pronoun badges at freshers week to ‘avoid misgendering’ of transgender students
The badges will be left blank for people to write their pronoun of choice on
A TOP university that sacked a student editor who said 'women don't have penises' is now handing out pronoun badges.
Durham uni joins Edinburgh in giving them out to new arrivals at freshers' week.
They are left blank for people to write their pronoun of choice on and are intended to help avoid misgendering students.
Student union welfare and liberation officer Meg Haskins said: "We are doing this to show our solidarity with, and support of, our trans and non-binary siblings and to raise awareness about what people can all do to be more inclusive.
"We want Durham SU to be as inclusive and safe a place as possible."
It comes a month after philosophy journal editor Angelos Sofocleous was fired following a transphobia row.
Angelos shared a Spectator article on his Twitter account called 'Is it a crime to say women don't have penises?'
Former chair of LGBT Humanists Christopher Ward claimed it was ‘factually incorrect’ and not 'worthy of a debate'.
But postgraduate Philosophy and Psychology student Mr Sofocleous hit back at critics saying they ‘cannot tolerate any criticism’ and ‘are unable to engage in a civilised conversation on issues they disagree on’.
