MORE than 130 desperate parents queued from 3am this morning in a bid to land their kids a place at a Welsh school's sought after breakfast club.

One parent said she "can't take the risk" not getting her children a place, while another woman said she left her home at 1am to get her grandchildren a spot in the early morning club.

Determined parents lined the kerb outside the 400-pupil Ysgol Y Berllan Deg primary school in Cardiff this morning for the annual breakfast club sign-up.

Places at the early morning club are limited and the school operates a first-come, first-serve policy. And as many parents have to commute to their jobs, landing a place is vital as, without it, they can't get to work.

Grandmother Annett Farrow, 69, left her home in Carmarthen, West Wales, at 1am to secure her place in the queue.

She said: "We have been on the road since 1am and got here at 3am."

She continued: "My son and daughter-in-law are on holiday so we had to come. If it gets them a place it will have been worth it.

"We have bought biscuits and crisps - the only problem is the toilets. We have been using the toilets in the hotel opposite."

Mum Leanne Taylor - who arrived at the school around 3am - told : "For some it is essential. I work opposite Tredegar House and I drive in.

"If I drop them off at 8.30 I won’t be getting into work until 10 because of the traffic."

She continued: "If I didn’t have this I would not be able to go to work - I can’t risk not getting a place, I don’t have a plan B.

"The ones that are here first are the ones that need it most. It gets longer and earlier because the people who did not get a place last year will get here earlier this year."

The school sends a letter out to parents to alert them to the sign-up date.

The breakfast club is a Welsh Government scheme which provides a free, healthy breakfast at school each day.
