Mills & Boon sorry for having too few ‘ethnic’ faces on book covers
The publishers of popular romance novels said market research showed its readers prefer white faces on their book covers
MILLS and Boon has admitted it has too few ethnic faces on its book covers.
The romance publisher said market research shows its readers prefer white characters on the front.
Executive publisher Lisa Milton told Radio 4’s Open Book: “We do have a lot of diverse characters but fewer diverse book covers.
“That is absolutely in response to what our market says to us, which I think has to change as the market evolves.”

The firm is now reviewing its jackets to help it increase the number of ethnic people on them.
Lisa said: “I have made a mis-step on covers. This is something we are very aware of tackling.”
