“I don’t know what resolved it in the end but I’m not surprised they were refused the grub.”

Several inmates clambered on to the huge bin at 1pm yesterday.

The stand-off is thought to have taken place in the nick’s outdoor grounds and ended around 4pm.

It is thought at least four inmates were involved. They are all likely to be disciplined over the incident.

Another source said: “These things always involve negotiating.

“Prisoners will make a lot of demands in cases like this — but they’re never going to get McDonald’s bought for them. Anything like that would be laughed out of town.”

The Scottish Prison Service said: “There was an incident with several young offenders at HMP Polmont. It ended peacefully with no injuries.”
