Spanish bakery with stores in London is forced to close after two large rats are spotted nibbling on sandwiches

THIS is the moment shocked passers-by caught rats on camera eating their way through a stack of ham sandwiches in a bakery in Madrid.

The bakery, which has stores in London, has been forced to shut following the rodent infestation.

Passers by filmed the night-time animal feast before calling police who ordered the temporary closure of the business until town hall chiefs carry out a detailed inspection.

The rats got stuck in at a food display at Granier Bakery’s Pueblo Nuevo branch in Madrid, one of more than 350 Spain’s leading bakery operates around the world including Woolwich and Wood Green in London.

The company confirmed the closure in a press release in which it claimed it was trying to get to the bottom of this “isolated incident.”

A spokesman said: “Granier confirms the Pueblo Nuevo establishment in Madrid has been closed and sealed off.

“The company has made itself available to the relevant authorities and opened an internal investigation.

“Granier confirms that the establishment has strictly complied with food safety standards.”

A company statement added: “Granier confirms this is is an isolated incident that is being investigated internally to detect the origin.

“All the more than 350 Granier establishments in Spain and around the world comply strictly with all food safety norms.”

A fumigations firm reportedly recommended structural improvements to the shop including repairs to a broken front door and holes in plasterboard ceilings when it made a recent site visit.

The bakery and cafe group opened its second premises in the UK on the Woolwich Arsenal estate in south east London at the end of last year as part of an expansion programme.

It has opened another three stores in London since then and also operates out of Miami.

The company, which operates a franchise system, boasts on its website: “In Granier Bakery, we’re loyal to artisanal recipes and we elaborate our products daily with traditional methods and with the best ingredients, in order to offer more than 65 speciality breads to our demanding customers.

“All our franchise bakeries offer a cafeteria pleasant atmosphere, with highest quality of bakery products.”

In November more than a dozen homes in Kent were plagued by massive, foot-long rodents which have been scurrying through gardens and lofts.
