My daughter was given 3 detentions in 1 WEEK over her skirt and using concealer – the school handed out 100 punishments

A FUMING mum has lashed out at a school after it handed her daughter three detentions in just one week over her uniform.

Stevie Coutts, 32, slammed Whitburn Church of England Academy in South Tyneside for its “ridiculous” rules after claiming “over thirty” kids were in detention in just one day.

Stevie even claims the “extreme” measures – which mean pupils have to stay an hour after school – have been given to kids for being just one minute late to class.

Stevie, whose daughter Ava, 13, attends the school, told The Sun Online the chaos at the school has sparked an “army of parents” to speak out.

The mum-of-two from South Shields, Tyne and Wear, previously told the : “The situation has become ridiculous and I think the rules are too extreme.

“Ava got three detentions in one week for uniform. Students are also being given detentions if they are a minute or two late.

“I understand the importance of time but surely there has to be a little bit of leeway.”

She added how her daughter had been given detentions for the way she was wearing uniform provided by the school and had even been punished for putting on a “small bit of concealer over a spot”.

It comes after parents were sent a letter before half-term warning for “every breach of expected uniform, there will be a one hour sanction after-school the same day”.

It urged parents not to allow kids to attend school in leggings or skirts “made from stretchy material” or too “tight fitting”.

But parents admitted that one of the issues with the schools demands is that it can be expensive to keep buying uniform for their kids who keep growing out of it.

Claire Storey, 33, whose daughter Amelia, 14, attends the school, said: “Children grow and we are halfway through the school year now and buying new uniform is an extra expense I can’t really afford.”

While another parent fumed: “My daughter stood up and her shirt popped out and she was threatened with detention.

“My other daughter was given a detention for having a skirt above the knee. You’re not talking a mini-skirt and she had thick black tights. Every day she was given a detention.”

We’re not disputing the rules

But after facing criticism online for speaking out against discipline, Stevie told The Sun Online people are missing the point and “we’re not disputing the rules”.

She explained: “[It is] Just how harsh, how much notice is being given – if any and how the teachers are talking to kids.”

And in another shocking incident, Stevie claims her daughter rang her in the playground where kids are allowed to use phones.

After stepping “one foot” inside the school building to say hi to a friend Stevie could hear a teacher scream ‘Ava Coutts give me your phone right now’.

The Sunderland Echo claimed 100 punishments had been handed out in one week – but the school cited that by the end of the week (Friday March 4) there were only six detentions issued.

LAYING DOWN THE LAW

Principal John Crowe defended the rules insisting they had always been in place but had been relaxed during the pandemic.

He said: “We do have high expectations from our students with regards to manners, behaviour and adopting a conscientious approach to their studies.

“The majority of our students are immaculately dressed in their uniform, which they wear with pride.

“We have asked parents and carers to continue to support us on this important issue and ensure that uniforms meet the expectations set by the school.”
