But when challenged on Friday morning, the pair dropped the corpse and claimed he was having a heart attack.

The 66-year-old — named locally as Peadar Doyle in the town of Carlow in the Republic of Ireland — had been dead for two days, it is said.

The two men, in their 30s, reportedly insisted to police Mr Doyle was alive when they escorted him into the shop.

A source said: “They pulled a jumper over his face, put a hat on his head and carried him to the post office.

"Emergency services were notified and the two made no effort to flee.”

It is said they earlier attempted to claim his pension but were told he needed to be present.

Carlow mayor Ken Murnane said: “I cannot believe anyone would do something like that.”

Police are investigating.
