Storm Barra tracker: Where is the extreme weather now in the UK?

STORM Barra battered parts of the UK and Ireland on December 7, 2021, with up to 80mph winds as one woman was pulled dead from the floods.

Intense tornados and a "weather bomb" prompted an urgent danger to life warning as Brits were told up to "12 inches of snow" was set to bury the country.

Where is Storm Barra now?

Disruptions struck on December 7 as Storm Barra brought winds of up to 80mph, and up to eight inches of snow.

The 1,000-mile wide storm saw snow, strong gales, flooding and freezing temperatures batter Britain.

The Met Office still has a yellow weather warning in place on Wednesday, December 8, across the south, south west and the Welsh coast.

There are six flood warnings across Somerset and Dorset, and 56 flood alerts.

As of the morning of December 8, 2021, 11 flood alerts remain in Scotland and nine flood warnings in Wales.

Where did Storm Barra hit in the UK?

Storm Barra hit Ireland by the end of December 6, 2021, and travelled eastwards overnight and barrelling across the whole of the UK.

Those in the south west and Wales woke up to wind and rain on December 7, 2021, with strong gusts developing throughout the day.

Snow developed in Northern Ireland, the Midlands and Scotland by lunchtime, with rain sweeping into the rest of England by the afternoon.

Forecaster Marco Petagna said: “It looks a nasty weather system, with low pressure deepening rapidly. It's going to be very windy.”

Almost all of the UK was covered by yellow weather warnings on December 7, 2021, for snow, ice, and wind, with a five-day deep freeze on the way.

Barra brought high winds in most parts as well as heavy rain, with flooding in the south of England.

Parts of the North East and Cumbria were warned of heavy snow and strong wind.

Coastal areas were battered by strong winds with warnings remaining in place in the south of England and coastal areas of Wales on December 8, 2021.

Pensioner Venetia Smith, 80, went missing from her home in Blandford, Dorset, on December 7, 2021, prompting her family to call the police.

The elderly woman was tragically found in the River Stour after her stroller was spotted at a bridge crossing near a supermarket.

The worst affected regions were coastal areas and the south west and south coast of Ireland.

The storm toppled trees, whipped up 35ft waves, triggered flood warnings and brought down power lines, causing more energy outages.

Meteorologists explained it had officially become a "weather bomb" - also known as an "explosive cyclogenesis" - which occurred when the central pressure of Storm Barra fell more than 24 millibars in a 24 hour period.
