By the time rescuers made it to the beach, the two women and the four kids were back on the sand.

Blankets were given to the children to warm them up after being in the freezing water.

A 34-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in charge of a vehicle and child neglect, and a 33-year-old held on suspicion of child neglect.

The coastguard also blasted the two drunk women for taking the children swimming while the tide was high at night.

Mumbles Coastguard tweeted: "Caswell Bay, pitch darkness, high tide, blowing a force four is not the place for your children's swimming lessons.

CHILD NEGLECT

"Thank you to the first informant, Tesco delivery driver who saw them and phoned it in and stayed there until we arrived."

The mums were still believed to be in police custody on Wednesday.

An RNLI lifeboat and coastguard helicopter were stood down as they made their way to the scene.

Tesco said its delivery driver alerted the emergency services after "he heard someone in distress in the sea" and "stayed at the site until help arrived."

Earlier this month, a young woman and a man died after being knocked off a sea wall by huge waves in Cornwall.

The woman in her 20s and man in his 40s were swept from the harbour wall at Mullion Cove.

Falmouth coastguard James Instance said a helicopter and two lifeboats were scrambled to save the pair.
