Join our George Cross campaign for NHS staff

We are urging Sun readers to sign a petition calling for our NHS staff to be awarded the George Cross.

We are backing a proposal by Lord Ashcroft to honour our health heroes with the gallantry gong given for acts of bravery that did not take place in battle.

A No10 spokesman said: “The NHS is doing a fantastic job and the nation will want to find a way to say thank you when we have defeated this virus.” SAS hero Andy McNab added: “The award of a George Cross would show an emotional appreciation.”

We are asking our readers to please sign the petition below.

Angie's family and NHS Borders Chief Executive Ralph Roberts today paid tribute to the much-loved mother, granny, and wife.

The statement said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear family member and colleague Angie Cunningham on Wednesday from COVID-19.

“Angie was a much loved wife, mother, sister, granny and great granny, as well as a friend to many more.

“Angie worked in NHS Borders for over 30 years and during this time was a much respected and valued colleague within the hospital, providing amazing care to patients.

“She was very proud to be a nurse alongside her love for her family.”

Yesterday, the coronavirus death toll reached 18,1o00, with 133,495 confirmed cases.

Britain will fall silent next week in memory of those who have died fighting Covid-19 on the NHS frontline.

At 11am on Tuesday April 28, the country will hold a minute’s silence organised by healthcare unions to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Royal College of Nursing general secretary Prof Dame Donna Kinnair said: “This respectful silence will be a poignant reminder of the risks they run to keep us safe.”
