Donald Trump looking at Tory plan to send illegal migrants to Rwanda after deterrent scheme was ditched by Keir Starmer

DONALD Trump’s team is looking at plans to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda, The Sun on Sunday can reveal.

The scheme was drawn up by the old British Tory government but ditched by Sir Keir Starmer when he became PM.

Allies of Mr Trump said his team is considering deporting illegal immigrants to a number of countries - including Rwanda.

A source close to Trump’s camp said: “Trump campaigned on a promise to crack down on illegal immigration - and he is determined to stick to it.

“His team is looking at the Rwanda scheme. He is considering deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda and other countries so they cannot stay on American soil.”

Mr Trump won a sweeping victory by promising to crack down on illegal immigration in America.

He accused Joe Biden and the Democrats of woefully failing to protect America’s borders.

The migrant crisis has hit new heights in America in recent years.

A staggering 10 million “encounters” with migrants suspected of trying to cross into the US illegally were logged by US authorities between January 2021 and September 2024.

Britain is in the grip of its open illegal migration crisis.

Some 32,900 Channel migrants crossed over in small boats so far this year.

This is higher than the number for all of 2023.

The Tories said their Rwanda deportation scheme was central to their plan to finally grip the crisis.

They promised to pay the African country £370m over five years to deport hundreds of illegal immigrants there.

Some of the cash was used to build Hope Hostel where the migrants would stay.

The building is still standing empty and could be used by another country.
