Nick Brown has been suspended from Labour for over a year but the party won't say why

SUSPENDED ex-Labour MP Nick Brown today confirmed he won't stand at the next general election.

Mr Brown, a former chief whip, had the whip removed in September 2022 and was put under investigation.

But more than 12 months on party chiefs STILL won't say what caused the move or when the probe will conclude.

Today Mr Brown announced he won't stand at the next election and is also quitting Labour with a “heavy heart”.

He claimed the party's complaints process is “fundamentally, and inexcusably, flawed”.

Mr Brown said: “Despite my hopes that good sense, legal propriety and basic natural justice might prevail, it has become increasingly clear to me not only that I cannot possibly expect a fair hearing, but that this process is a complete farce.

“Things have reached a very sorry pass when the likely next party of government conducts cases of this gravity in a manner more akin to those of a mismanaged golf club.”

Mr Brown still receives a tax-payer funded salary of £86,584.

The MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East was chief whip for every Labour leader from Tony Blair onwards.

At 72 he's one of the party's longest serving politicians.

At the time of his suspension Mr Brown said he's “cooperating fully” with Labour's investigation.

The senior MP said: “There has been a complaint made about me to the Labour party, which is under investigation.

"I am therefore under an administrative suspension from the Labour party until the investigation is concluded.

"I’m not aware of what the complaint is. I am cooperating fully with the investigation.”

A Labour spokesperson said: “The Labour Party treats all complaints with the utmost seriousness.

"The Labour Party has established an independent complaints process that ensures complaints are decided impartially and fairly.”
