LABOUR PROBE

Ex-Labour whip STILL getting huge pay pack despite being suspended a year ago as Keir refuses to reveal reason

SIR Keir Starmer came under fire today for failing to explain why a senior MP was suspended from the Labour party one year ago.

Nick Brown, a former chief whip, had the whip removed in September 2022 and was put under investigation.

But 12 months on party chiefs STILL won't say what caused the move or when the probe will conclude.

Meanwhile, Mr Brown still receives a tax-payer funded salary of  £86,584.

The MP for Newcastle upon Tyne East was chief whip for every Labour leader from Tony Blair onwards.

At 72 he's one of the party's longest serving politicians.

A Labour spokesperson said: "We do not comment on disciplinary processes specifically.

"There can always be a number of reasons why these cases take a long time.

"But we have a thorough, robust, independent process and they should be allowed to get on with their work."

At the time of his suspension Mr Brown said he's “cooperating fully” with Labour's investigation.

The senior MP said: “There has been a complaint made about me to the Labour party, which is under investigation.

"I am therefore under an administrative suspension from the Labour party until the investigation is concluded.

"I’m not aware of what the complaint is. I am cooperating fully with the investigation.”

Alongside Mr Brown the fate of veteran MP Diane Abbott also hangs in the balance.

Ms Abbott was suspended from Labour in April for saying Jewish people don't suffer racism.

Labour has been contacted for comment.
