He then hastily deleted the bizarre poll and confirmed he will be handing the mysterious file to MPs at a committee appearance next Wednesday.

Mr Cummings is expected to use the high-stakes session to eviscerate No10's handling of the crisis after launching a volley of attacks online.

Today he opened up a new front in his tirade by tweeting: "I've got the only copy of a historical document from Covid decision-making."

The now-removed post asked users to vote whether he should unveil the files at his committee appearance, on his blog, or via auction.

Downing Street today refused to be drawn on the threats of the critical Brexit mastermind.

The PM's spokesman said: "I'm not going to speculate on what information individuals may have or what they might have and might choose to make that public."

But in a potential nod to stringent rules against leaking, he added: "Obviously there are clear rules that are abided by in these situations."

The former No10 chief adviser, who was ousted last December following brutal infighting, fired off a flurry of critical tweets in the waiting room to get his first vaccine.

He said Westminster had been "blinded" by the success of the UK's jab rollout in comparison to the EU - and that may have stunted progress.

And he took aim at tight-lipped ministers for keeping roadmap contingency plans under wraps.

For the past month he has regularly criticised ministers for failing to close the borders, which No10 today defended as robust.

Last month he published an explosive 1,000-word blogpost accusing the PM of "falling so far below the standards of competence and integrity the country deserves".

He hit back after Mr Johnson blamed him for of a series of destabilising leaks.
