Political guru stuns pro-EU campaigners with Brexit victory prediction

Tory peer claims working-class Labour voters will swing vote in Leave's favour

BRITAIN will vote to leave the EU on June 23 – one of the UK’s most respected pollsters has claimed in a stunning verdict two weeks before the historic vote.

Robert Hayward, the first man to call the Tory win in last year’s General Election, said working-class Labour supporters across the North and the Midlands were backing Brexit.

Boris Johnson and the Vote Leave camp appear to be pulling away at the polls

The expert added that middle class voters in banking and finance were not anywhere near as in favour of staying in the EU as expected, even in London.

And the Tory peer said that David Cameron’s scare tactics on the economy were not working

He said: “Unless something substantial changes in the remaining days of the EU Referendum campaign, the balance of probability is that the nation will vote to Leave.

“The polls have got it wrong”

Lord Hayward added that some young Brits were backing a Brexit as they had the same “rose tinted” view of the UK as many elder voters  – and wanted to cut ties with Brussels.

The peer is famed for being the first to spot the “Shy Tory” phenomenon in the 1992 Election, when he predicted John Major would beat Neil Kinnock

He forecast a Tory win at the 2015 General Election last year.

The news will be one in the eye for David Cameron who is leading the Remain campaign

He told the Sun that – speaking as a Remain supporter – he hoped he was wrong this time round and added that  a higher than expected turnout could change the outcome.

But he warned the Government would have to “sharpen it act” and  change the tone of its message in the coming days to convince more “professional females” to back their cause.

He said: “The message has been very strident, very male. They are not getting the message on the economy.”

The poll is a hammer blow to David Cameron after three shock polls on Monday gave the Brexit campaign a lead. But it will also pile pressure onto the Labour party and Jeremy Corbyn, who has come under fire for a lacklustre campaign effort so far.

Lord Hayward said: “Many Labour supporters don’t seem to be aware their party is pro-Remain.”

The peer – a former Tory MP – has based his opinion on a statistical analysis of polls produced so far – and comparing them with his own conversations with voters.

Where they deviate, almost everyone “is towards Leave”. He said: “Someone very high up in the City was saying this week they’d probably vote to Remain, just, because of their kids.

“But these are the people David Cameron should have in the bag.”

A Vote Leave spokesman today said: “Polls go up and down, we are focused on reminding people of the dangers of staying in. The 23 June is the only the time the British people will get a vote on whether they want to open their borders to Turkey.”
