TAKING three brisk 10-minute walks a day may be better for your health than hitting a total of 10,000 steps, it has been claimed.
A small experiment saw a number of Sheffield factory workers split into two groups after being given activity monitors.
One was asked to reach the 10,000 steps target a day, which works out to around five miles.
The other was told to do three sessions of a fitness routine named Active 10, in which you’re expected to take three brisk 10-minute walks a day.
That adds up to around 1.5 miles or 3,000 steps.
The study for BBC show The Truth About Getting Fit was conducted by Professor Rob Copeland from Sheffield Hallam University.
He found the Active 10 group spent less time actually moving, but more time getting out of breath and increasing their heart rate.
This meant they benefited more from the exercise.
He explained: "The Active 10 group actually did 30 per cent more moderate to vigorous physical activity than the 10,000-step group, even though they moved for less time.
"And it's when you are doing moderate intensity activity that you are starting to get the greatest health benefits."
The idea that taking 10,000 steps a day was beneficial for health was dreamt up in the 1960s as part of a Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer.
The eldest Kardashian sister, 38, has cited apple cider vinegar as being the secret to her fit physique, in her latest app post.
She confessed: “Every morning, when I wake up, I take collagen supplements on an empty stomach.
“About 20 minutes after the collagen, I usually drink one tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar mixed into a glass of water.
“Both of these habits have a ton of health benefits that affect everything from your skin to the way your body processes nutrients.”
