EU CAN'T LEAVE

Remainer MPs publish bill making No Deal illegal and could delay Brexit for another three months

REBEL Tory MPs will try to force Boris Johnson to delay Brexit for at least another three months into 2020 if he fails to win a new deal.

The alliance of Remainer Tories and opposition MPs yesterday published a bill that makes a No Deal exit on October 31 illegal.

If it’s passed, it compels the PM to ask the EU for and also accept an extension of Article 50 talks until January 31.

The law also allows the EU to set an even longer extension with the Commons’ approval.

In an extra lock, only a successful vote in the Commons will allow the UK to leave on time without a new agreement in place.

The European Union (Withdrawal) (no 6) Bill will be voted on by MPs tomorrow.

First, the alliance of MPs will try to win a vote tonight to seize control of Parliament’s timetable.

'LAST CHANCE TO STOP NO DEAL'

Experts last night said Mr Johnson would be trapped by the bill if it passes.

Former Tory special adviser Chris White and legislation guru said it “looks pretty watertight to me”.

Mr White added: “Mandating to accept any extension on offer is the crucial point which goes further than last Cooper-Letwin Bill in April, which only mandated Government to seek it”.

Mr Benn said: “The purpose of the Bill is to ensure that the UK does not leave the European Union on the 31 October without an agreement, unless Parliaments consents.”

But a furious No10 argued it would immediately destroy the PM’s negotiating hand, ripping up any freedom to walk away from Brussels talks.

Who are the Tory MPs risking their careers to vote against a No Deal Brexit?

The cross party bill is signed by three former Tory ministers – Philip Hammond, David Gauke and Alistair Burt, as well as Labour and Lib Dem MPs, and Green MP Caroline Lucas.

Labour’s Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer MP, who also helped draw it up, added: “This Bill will stop Boris Johnson forcing through a reckless and damaging No Deal Brexit on 31st October.

“This week could be Parliament’s last chance to stop a No Deal Brexit. MPs must act in the national interest and support this Bill.”
