Boris Johnson declares Britain’s best days are ahead of us in defiant message to Brexit doom-mongers in EU and UK

BORIS Johnson last night slammed Brexit doom-mongers at home and abroad as he declared Britain’s best days are ahead of us.

On the eve of his first global summit the PM took aim at EU leaders most opposed to Brexit and Remainers at home to say they are “gravely mistaken” to bet against Britain.

And he sent another message to his EU counterparts that he is not bluffing with his “do or die” Brexit pledge by October 31 by announcing Britain won’t be appointing a new EU Commissioner.

The move creates a huge legal hurdle for the EU if it wanted to try to delay Brexit further because it is illegal for a member state not to be represented in the EU Commission.

Ahead of the G7 meeting of world leaders in Biarritz this weekend Mr Johnson vowed to lead Britain as an “outward-looking, self-confident nation” that will “never flinch from the special responsibilities that go with being a pillar and an architect of the international system”.

In a message to the likes of French President Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk – two leading critics of Britain’s vote to leave the EU, as well as Remainer doom-mongers back home, Mr Johnson said last night: “Some people question the democratic decision this country has made, fearing that we will retreat from the world, some think Britain’s best days are behind us but to those people I say: you are gravely mistaken.”
