JEREMY Corbyn declared for the first time today he would back Remain in a second referendum if No Deal Brexit was the alternative.
He called on Boris Johnson to ditch the October 31 deadline and demand another extension from Brussels.
The Labour leader delighted his Europhile MPs by categorically vowing to campaign to stay in the EU.
Mr Corbyn said: “What we said is, if it is No Deal or Remain, we will campaign for Remain.” But he was blasted by his own MPs for betraying Labour Leavers.
MP for Bassetlaw John Mann said Mr Corbyn’s vow exposed how disconnected his clique of North London allies is from the party heartlands.
He told The Sun: “The Labour party seems to be moving away from the northern working class. Having promised to deliver on the referendum, every day now we see a move in the opposite direction as is the politics of Islington.
"This is an Islington-run Labour party, it’s their values, it’s their principles and most importantly it’s their priorities and those priorities don’t accord with areas like mine.”
LABOUR SPLIT DEEPENS
It came just hours after Mr Corbyn’s ally, Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott piled pressure on him to go further and pledge to back Remain whatever the circumstances.
She told the BBC: “Jeremy wants to have the widest consultation. He can’t stay to the side on an issue like this — what he can do is bring the two sides together.
“The party and the Shadow Cabinet will have to debate this and arrive at a position — whatever the position is Jeremy will follow what the party says.” She became the third Shadow Cabinet minister to declare she would campaign for Remain even if there was a renegotiated Brexit deal.
It deepens Labour’s splits after Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry backed Remain whatever the circumstances.
Ms Abbott also refused to say if Labour would bring an end to freedom of movement for EU citizens after Brexit.
Mr Corbyn claimed the Government’s policy to restrict free movement could become a scandal like “Windrush on steroids”.
He said Home Secretary Priti Patel had adopted a “ludicrous position”.
Jezza said: “Does that mean that if an EU national living in this country, possibly as a doctor, a nurse, a trauma surgeon, all kinds of things, goes home to see their family in Germany or Czech Republic or wherever else, they are not allowed back into this country?”
