Money no object for new Chancellor Sajid Javid as he spends for cliff-edge No Deal Brexit
SAJID Javid has opened the chequebook for No Deal and urged ministers to step up preparations for October 31.
The new Chancellor told colleagues he was turning on the spending taps in a marked change from his predecessor Philip Hammond.
In his Sun column today James Forsyth reveals Mr Javid told them to send requests to the Treasury marked “No Deal planning” and he would ensure they got what they needed — and fast.
One minister in a front-line department said: “Saj has basically said the chequebook is open on No Deal.”
It was taken as a sign he and Boris Johnson were aligned on leaving without a deal if the EU did not budge.
Mr Hammond was blasted by Brexiteer Tories for dragging his feet on releasing funds to get ready for No Deal.
Leave guru Dominic Cummings, Mr Johnson’s senior adviser, has reportedly been talking to the Treasury to ensure more is available.
It was also confirmed the Treasury was looking again at Mr Hammond’s vow to cap public sector borrowing at two per cent of GDP. Scrapping it would allow more to be spent.
