BOJO BREXIT BOOST

Many Labour MPs are ready to vote for ‘any Brexit deal’, senior party officials say

MORE than a dozen Labour MPs would now back a Brexit deal “in a heartbeat” in a boost to the new Tory PM, senior party backbenchers have said.

One Labour MP who voted against Mrs May’s deal three times told The Sun that she was now desperate to vote for “any deal” that resembled Theresa May’s Brexit deal.

The MP said: “If it bore any semblance to Mrs May’s deal, I’d vote for it in a heartbeat.” She added that the number of Labour MPs doing the same would be in double figures, while at least another dozen would choose to abstain.

Senior Labour MP John Mann, who voted for the deal three times, said up to 30 of his party’s MPs could either vote for the deal or abstain.

It would significantly improve the chances of a Brexit deal getting through the Commons if the next PM attempted to stage a vote on a similar agreement to Mrs May’s in the autumn.

Only five Labour MPs voted for Mrs May’s deal when it was defeated for the third and final time on March 29, while just two abstained. The PM lost the vote by a margin of 58.

One MP even joked that several Labour MPs could find themselves “locked in the toilet” so they could dodge a no confidence vote aimed at stopping a No Deal Brexit under Boris Johnson.

Meanwhile yesterday the Wigan MP Lisa Nandy said she would also now vote for the deal - as long as the next PM keeps Mrs May’s pledge to mirror EU workers’ rights.

Asked if she would vote for the deal now, Ms Nandy told : “If that deal were put on the table through the Withdrawal Agreement Bill I would do - as I said we should just before Theresa May resigned - and vote for it at second reading in order to thrash out the details at a later date because there are still outstanding concerns.

“But my God, why did it take so long? We had three years, why did it take so long?”

But she then said she’d vote to revoke Article 50 rather than back a No Deal Brexit.

The news will come as a boost to Boris Johnson should he attempt to stage a Brexit deal vote if he becomes PM
