MARCHING ON COMMONS

Nigel Farage hails ‘democracy day’ as Brexit Party on course to get first ever MP as candidate in Peterborough by-election

NIGEL Farage has hailed D-Day as 'democracy day' as his Brexit Party looks set to gain its first MP tonight in the Peterborough by-election.

Farage has arrived ahead of tonight's count where his candidate Mike Greene is odds-on favourite to take the seat previously held by Labour.

It would mean Mr Farage's new party entering the Commons for the first time - just months after it was founded - in a massive blow to both Labour and the Tories.

Farage told The Sun Online: "For Peterborough to elect their first Brexit Party MP on D-Day would be hugely symbolic - it would be democracy day.

"It's clearly a two horse race, between us and Labour. But it feels pretty good.

"In normal circumstances that Labour should be winning this seat by tonnes of votes but they are really worried they are going to lose it us. It's going to be very close all the way."

BREXIT PARTY ODDS-ON TO TAKE SEAT

Mr Greene was this evening at 1/5 to win the Peterborough seat at bookies Ladbrokes.

Labour were second on 7/2, with the Lib Dems and Tories both at 50/1.

A Labour source told The Sun: "It's going to be very tricky."

The by-election was triggered after previous Labour MP Fiona Onasanya was jailed for lying about speeding.

The Tories were originally believed to have a good chance of taking Peterborough.

But after Brexit was delayed beyond March 29, the party's poll ratings collapsed and it would now be a big shock if they did win.

Labour's candidate Lisa Forbes has been hit with claims of anti-Semitism during the campaign.

The Lib Dems have launched a late surge with Remain voters believed to be flocking to the pro-EU party.

Under Mr Farage's leadership, Ukip won two by-elections - but both times the winner was a former Tory MP.

The Brexit Party recently came top of a national poll for the first time as the Tories and Labour continue to sink.
