Theresa May says she regrets Brexit shambles at her second-to-last Brussels summit

THERESA May spoke of her Brexit regret as she flew to Brussels for her penultimate Brussels summit - just four days after quitting.

The outgoing PM said the European elections were “deeply disappointing” for the Tories and showed “the importance of actually delivering on Brexit."

She reiterated her view that the best way forward was to leave with a deal but said it was now for her successor to “find a way forward to get a consensus."

Expressing her regret as she arrived in Brussels for a formal dinner with fellow EU leaders to discuss the next EU Commission, Mrs May said: “ I have been to something like 15 council meetings or more and have been working hard to very hard.

“It is a matter of great regret to me that I haven’t been able to deliver Brexit but that matter of course is for my successor. They will have to find a way of addressing very strongly held views on all sides.”
