Britain should quit EU as soon as possible and NOT hold second referendum, top Macron ally blasts

EMMANUEL Macron's EU elections chief has said Britain should quit the bloc as soon as possible rather than hold a second referendum.

Nathalie Loiseau said a fresh vote on reversing Brexit would not deliver a different result to in 2016 and would only create a "very divided" UK.

And she warned of an "unacceptable" situation where Britain is still half in, half out of the bloc, thwarting future EU integration.

Mrs Loiseau, a former Europe minister who is close to the French President, said the Brexit question should be revisited "in the future if need be".

She was responding to Theresa May offering MPs a vote on holding a second referendum as part of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill.

Speaking on French radio she said: "I'm not sure that a new referendum would necessarily have a very different outcome.

"I fear the result would again be a very divided UK. It's necessary that the UK moves forward together, that Brexit takes place.

"They can't have one foot in the door saying I want to stay but go out, both at the same time, and especially not I'll block everything in the EU.

"We ask them to allow us to go forward on our own path, and in the meantime we ask Britain not to export its political crisis over to the EU."

Officials close to the French president say he will oppose a further delay to Brexit in October unless there's a clear British plan to end the impasse.

Mrs Loiseau is the lead candidate for Mr Macron's La Republique en Marche, in this week's EU elections.

The party is currently trailing Marine Le Pen's far-right Rassemblement National in the polls.
