Cross-party Brexit talks going nowhere leaving Tories on collision course with disastrous EU elections

Hopes that the PM could hold another Brexit vote in the coming weeks are fading fast - meaning Britain is on track to fight the EU poll next month

TORIES are on course for a disastrous EU election in four weeks as cross-party Brexit talks are going nowhere.

Hopes that the PM could hold another Brexit vote in the coming weeks and pass it are fading fast - meaning Britain is on track to fight the EU poll next month.

That's despite Theresa May promising she wouldn't hold the polls - almost three years after Britain voted to leave the EU.

Nominations for the EU elections - which will likely be held on May 23 - closed last night.

Plans to try and push through another Brexit vote next week appear to have been dropped.

No10 hinted she could bring forward the Withdrawal Bill as a whole for MPs to vote on, but yesterday it was confirmed it wasn't on the agenda for next week.

Meanwhile, the Government's talks with Labour have stalled as both sides refuse to compromise - and many advisers think Britain will be forced to take part in the EU poll as a result.

Mrs May's allies said Labour was trying to string out the talks but the Opposition blasted the PM for refusing to budge from her red lines.

Today Philip Hammond said he'd had "very constructive meetings" with Labour and he was "optimistic that we will find common ground".

Yesterday allies of the PM said the "next massive deadline" would be on June 30 - just before any MEPs would take their seats for the first time.

Allies said she would push for a deal before the summer holidays or Brexit could slip away completely.

And furious Tory backbenchers would be certain to launch a new campaign to oust her in protest if the deadlock continues.

Despite securing a Brexit extension which EU bosses have told her not to waste, there's still no clear plan of how to force our EU exit through.

Mrs May had indicated she would hold a series of votes in the Commons if talks with Labour failed.

It comes as a fresh poll today showed that 45 per cent of Brits would vote to Remain in the EU, while 37 per cent want to leave it.

Seven in ten Europeans would opt to stay in the bloc if there was a poll in their country, the Eurobarometer survey showed.

MP Ben Bradley said last night that it was "impossible to keep everyone happy" and he'd told No10 aides after the 2017 election that the Tories had to pick a side - and that should have been leave.

"Sadly PM consistently fudged it down the middle to try & leave in a way that both sides are happy with," he said.

"Sorry but can't be done. If you stand in the middle of the road you get hit by cars from both sides. People would have more faith & understanding if she just stuck to her word."

Some voters are already getting their EU polling cards sent in the post too.
