Fury as Labour’s David Lammy compares Tory MPs to Nazis and says Brexit is like the rise of Hitler in bizarre rant

LABOUR MP David Lammy today sparked a backlash after comparing Brexiteers to NAZIS in a furious outburst.

The hardline Remainer claimed figures like Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg are similar to Hitler.

Outraged Tories hit out at Mr Lammy claiming the MP has "lost it" with the outlandish comparison.

The Labour veteran has previously said that compromising with Brexit supporters is similar to appeasement in the 1930s.

Asked if he regrets the comments, Mr Lammy told the BBC: "I would say that wasn't strong enough.

"I'm not backing off on this - never will I back off on this on behalf of my constituents.

"I'm sorry, but very, very seriously, of course we should not appease that, of course we should not appease that.

"The BBC should not allow this extreme hard-right fascism to flourish. What kind of country are we going to be like if these people are running it?"

RANT BACKLASH

He referred to previous reports of Boris Johnson meeting Donald Trump's adviser Steve Bannon, and Jacob Rees-Mogg retweeting the far-right Alternative for Germany.

When host Andrew Marr pointed out that Tory Brexiteers are elected politicians, Mr Lammy blasted: "I don't care how elected they are, so were the far right in Germany.

"British soldiers in this country died fighting this thuggery and extremism and here we are in 2019 with people bringing it into the mainstream for their political advantage."

The bizarre rant was slammed by Tory MPs who warned they had lost respect for Mr Lammy - previously hailed for his campaigning across the political spectrum.

Mr Rees-Mogg hit back, saying: "I feel sorry for Mr Lammy. Comparing a parliamentary ginger group with an organisation and creed that killed 6million Jewish people makes him look foolish and his comments unbalanced."

Conor Burns added: "I used to have regard for David Lammy. But this is bats**t. Comparing ERG to Hitler is quite something. Fully lost it."

Mr Lammy is campaigning for a second referendum which could overturn Brexit and keep us in the EU.

At a rally last month, he suggested anti-Brexit campaigners are following in the footsteps of heroes such as Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela who fought against tyranny.
