Sajid Javid’s ‘detailed plans for a soft Irish border were not implemented after being dismissed by HMRC’

Sajid Javid drew up a detailed plan to keep the Irish border soft after Brexit but was stopped from implementing it by the Treasury, it was claimed.

The Home Secretary put Border Force officials to work on how technology can be used to avoid the controversial Irish backstop.

But allies of Mr Javid told The Daily Telegraph that HMRC were “incredibly dismissive of it and not interested”.

Mr Javid in February revealed that he thought an invisible Irish border would be “perfectly possible” using technology – and said he had seen the proof.

The latest row will fuel speculation Mr Javid is trying to woo Brexiteers as he prepares to take a run at the Tory leadership.

But sources told The Sun the Home Office has been given hundreds of millions of pounds to prepare Britain’s borders for Brexit – but has failed to spend all of the cash on offer.
